My favourite breed, and the 2nd most popular breed here in the UK. Also the ONLY breed the UK Kennel Club certified 'good with children' last year!
They are an extremely well loved part of Britain and are such softies! My Elliot is a Staffie mix.

| | Guest | "Good with children?" mmmm... yes I supposes they are to a point, I have never owned a staffi myself so I dont have 1st hand knowledge of the breed but my sister-in-law ownes one and has 5 girl's ranging from 3 to 14 yrs. Their dog is great with her lot but she wont let him be alone with any of the younger kids she dosent trust him "that" much but then again in my oppinion no dog should be left alone with small kids no matter what the breed. He is a soppy thing and loves to get fussed but is also a watch dog and can be verbally edgy with strangers who go to the house.
I love the staffi grin, so dopey looking and the tail often wagg's the whole dog when they get exited lol....
Me I'm a EBT fan so of course I'm going to think English Bull Terrier's are the best dog to have lol....but then again I am biased

Wendy, I've also known some who I wouldn't trust with kids either. But, I was simply quoting the KC

I have to say those puppies are obsoletely GORGEOUS!
I would have to say staffi's are the most friendliest bread I have ever owned.
My Bitch loves to cuddle up to me give me wet sloppy kisses lol.
Having her is like having a toddler

I do hope you get your staffie returned safe and well, Honda.
After owning staffs for over 20 years, I certainly do think they are reliable with children and people. Their in-breeding has taught them to be aggressive towards other dogs, not towards man.
But that aside I would concur that no toddler or baby should be left alone with any dog.
I know how much it hurts when a little one pulls my hair, it doesn't hurt a dog any less.

Having owned staffies for the past 30 years, and brought up my kids from babies with them, have to say they are the perfect dog for kids...I have never worried about my dogs around children, staffies get bad press and are scorned by people who do not know the breed....If these people got to know them, they would see what a little power pack of fun they are.... They need to be socialised from day one, my girls are good with, sheep, cows, horses infact anything, they sleep with my cats.....A well brought up staffies is a joy to own....

I think staffies are beautiful dogs, but I have to agree with Dopeydawg and say that I would never leave any toddler alone with any dog/any breed.
Thing is, if anything ever did happen, then it is the dog and breed that suffer the bad press. And we know how the press like to hang onto things like this.
I agree with Taz, they do need to be socialised from day one. But unfortunately not all people do this. In fact most don't.
I was furious the other year when I went to a rescue sanctuary where I got my dog. A man was bringing back a tiny staffie pup, that can't have been more than 8 weeks old (and shouldn't have been sent for re-homing anyway) he was saying how it had "bitten" his child.
Er, I think not. But you can see how these things start.
It's just safer for the dogs to presume that most owners aren't responsible and give sensible guidelines.
