Height to the withers (shoulders) is done by having the dog stand and measure from the shoulders to the floor.

well each breed has a proportion that is correct but for most breeds it is not actually spelled out in inches.
Lab: Standard height for mature males is 22½ to 24½ inches and for mature females, 21½ to 23½ inches. Females range in weight from about 65-75 and males from about 85-100
Pit: Actual weight and height are less important than the correct proportion of weight to height. Desirable weight for a mature male in good condition is between 35 and 60 pounds. Desirable weight for a mature female in good condition is between 30 and 50 pounds.

Primarily most dog breeds have height measurements as far as standards go not length. If that is what you are referring to..
Also, here is a little about the English and American versions of the lab.
Note that the English (commonly referred to as "Blockheads") resemble the head more so of a Pit than the American version. Eye set further apart do primarily to wider skull.
The pics you show do indicate a broader head and jowl at least in these pics.

As Orangedog notes, the Pit since not an AKC registerable breed does not necessarily fall into the "Height" issue as far as breed standards. Standards are written by the breed clubs and published by the Kennel Clubs whether it be the AKC, CKC, UKC or FCI.
There are the exceptions such as the Manchester Terrier.

The "english" "american" lab thing was created by puppy mills and bybs as a reason their labs do not look the way they are suposed to. they should never be tall, lanky, thin, or have a fine pointed muzzle. the labrador retriever is a short, stocky, medium/large dog with a strong broad head to cary retrieved game. reputable breeders simply breed correct labs and do not "market" them as one type or another.
yes todd yoru girl looks a LOT like those dogs!

I agree but unfortunately the term has gotten out there and for so long there is continued debate over it. To the point that the terms have been somewhat accepted. Granted, A Lab is a Lab. But need we forget that nearly every breed of dog in this country has been altered from its original state to one degree or another. Americans have an incestuous desire to not be content with the real without trying to Americanize for the sake of claiming what is not theirs. This has gone on in the dog breed world for generations.
It only takes looking back to the land of origin of breeds to see the differences in what we have here to what they have there.

Very true and this is one of the many reasons I include imported dogs in my breeding program. I find many of them are more "correct" especially in temperament as well as health!!
those kits are a crapshoot. one of my clients used two different brands on her dog and came back with:
test #1 - German Shorthair pointer, Sheltie and something else
Test #2 - collie, lab, poodle
the dog looks like a smooth border collie! there is NO pointer, poodle or lab in this dog for sure
she was free, your not showing her or breeding her.... is she healthy and a good dog? thats all that matters!
