How old is the dog in the pic? If it's full grown it kind of looks like it could be a shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix...

I think it would be pointless looking for another dog that resembles the one in the photo. Some of a dog's character and behaviour arises from the way it is brought up. If you want a GSD type then look for a breeder with smaller GSD's rather than trying to replicate the dog you once had.

First off, the dog in the pic looks like a pup, maybe about 4-5 months old. And from someone who has raised them for 28 years, I can tell you that they do not come small. I'm talking purebreds.
Why don't you check out petfinder? You may find one on there. Or take a walk at your local shelter?

i dont know how old that dog is...i just found that pic online. but mine was very small as an adult. i know i'll probably never find a dog exactly like her but i was just looking for something similar. i love german shepherds but they are very large dogs. i just wanted one that wouldnt grow too big. she was a very good guard dog. i'll look into that mix, thanks

yeah it is pointless. i've spent too many hours already trying to find one. it would take a miracle to find one like her. just looking for a pup as close as possible. just wanted to see if i can find another mix like her. if i knew what she was mixed with.

Here in the Uk there is a fair variety of sizes - not in the same way as with certain breeds that have different sizes but the dogs that come without paperwork do seem to vary in size a little from the very solid and chunky to the lighter and slimmer dog.
As for trying to find a dog like your old one - I held off getting my Jack Russell for nearly 12 years because I thought I would never find one like my old boy. When the time was right to get a new dog I had a choice of 4 or 5 that looked like my old dog and chose one that looked totally different. The key is to get a dog because you are going to love it for who it is, not to look for one that will be a clone for the one you have lost.

Just my opinion...
When you lose a companion and are ready to add a new one, don't even try to get a "replacement." Just like people, all dogs are unique. Just because a dog looks similar, it doesn't mean that he/she will be like the one you lost.
I have two Jacks - same parents but, different litters (2 years apart). They are as different as night and day. Going by their personalities, you would never guess that they came from the same parents. My girl is timid in the outside world but, as sneaky as they come. My boy is a typical Jack in every way. There is no way on earth that you can ever "replace" one that was lost. Each dog that you share your life with carves their own special place in your heart.

There are shepherds that are smaller than others. As others have suggested, check Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder and your local rescue groups/shelters. I'm sure there are plenty of shepherds out there that aren't as large as your typical one.
Where are you from? I'd be happy to help you search.

Ethical breeders don't mess around with breeds. But many BYB's do. Hence why ethical breeders should be the only ones breeding. I am so very sick of hearing teacup, micro, mini(as in mini yorkie, mini maltese). And I am sure that the ones there are of mixed breed and look more like the GSD. I'll be honest, I have yet to see a small GSD. My son-in-law is from England. When he came here 3 years ago with his parents, they brought over their beautiful GSD Monty. Apparently named after Monty Python. LOL

I seriously hope this isn't the only reason. Any breed can be protective even with the family. You shouldn't base a breed only for this reason. I love this breed because I grew up with it. I love the look and the temperment. My husband also loves this breed and has been working with them for 30 years.
