rescued stray puppy, any ideas what he is?
Hi all! We recently adopted a puppy from the pound that was found as a stray at about 3 months old. He has just started losing his puppy teeth. We think he is about 5 months old now. He already stands almost as tall as our 6 yr old border collie. He is very vocal, sounds like a bear cub. Likes to sleep where there is any kind of draft. I have attached a picture. We thought he might be a Pyrenees or Samoyed but he has a long snout and his ears are very large and now stand up straight. People always ask why we shaved his face, but the lamb look is au natural. I hope the hair on his forehead stays that way. Any ideas what he might be?

Could be a Pyrenees mix. We just got a pyrenees from the pound a week and a half ago. He was a stray. Looks just like a pyr face, except the ears. He sure is a fluffy little guy. I want to see what he looks like at 9 months. It would be easier to tell.

Welcome to the forum!
Yeh, a little young yet but will take a guess anyhow---But yes let us see more pics as he changes in looks! It is maybe just a coincidence but I was thinking some Norwegian Elkhound so I looked it up in my breeds book----Here is part of the description it gave: Although it is totally silent while tracking, the Elkhound is perhaps the most 'talkative' dog of all. It has a whole vocabulary of sounds, each with a different meaning, and you will soon learn to recognize its way of telling you there are strangers about. unquote.
The other dog that came to mind was the Samoyed (same as you were thinking) and both of these breeds I am mentioning here are members of the Spitz family of dogs. You realize of course that your dog (who is a pretty dog by the way!) could be a mixture of a couple/three different breeds!
Here are a couple of links to pics and descriptions of these 2 breeds:
Norwegian Elkhound Information and Pictures, Norwegian Elkhounds --Be sure to scroll all the way as the ads get in between and is misleading. This face color may sound a little off but 2 things: Your pup's coat may change color as it gets mature and if your dog is more than 1 breed---coloring could come from that other breed.
Samoyed Information and Pictures, Samoyeds, Sami, Sammys, Samies

No idea what breeds could be there but he really is a stunning looking dog.

thanks
Thanks for your ideas and kind words. He is a pretty dog, he was at the city pound for a month before we got to adopt him, we thought about him everyday, couldn't resist that face. This is a more recent picture of Murphy with my older dogs, sorry about the quality, it was taken on a phone. I will post newer ones when I have them. I would just like to know the breed to help with training, I am also worried as he will sleep in another room if it is cooler and sometimes won't come inside. I hope he doesn't prefer to be an "outside" dog, as I could never leave him out. I am hoping it is because he was a stray and is still adjusting. He is very friendly and curious, but does think he owns everything he finds.

The brow line indicates the dog has either Husky or Malamute in it. The feet look like those found on a Mal.

I know exactly what he is!
BIG LOL
Pyr x Malamute perhaps? where does his tail sit? Curled over his back, out like a rudder or down like a GSD? He's gonna be beautiful!
Hey, I'm not too far away from you! not too often i find other Albertans on Forums

A pyrenees tail will curl over the back too when it's excited. It says in the breed standard it's supposed to form a perfect o over the back when up and have a slight hook at the end when it's down.

I can't offer any more insight on the breed, but wow he's cute! He looks so soft and fluffy.

That pup definitely has Samoyed in him. A lot of Samoyed.
