Default What mix do you think?

We adopted our dog Ruby in late October, and we were told she was 10 months and a beagle mix. Our vet she was more like a year and 4 months. I definitely see the beagle in her,and she barks/howls like one, but she only weighs 15lbs. and has long slender legs, small paws and fine bone structure. I am leaning toward Italian greyhound and beagle. What does everyone think? Thanks.

She is so pretty - and your children are beautiful too. She looks like two completely different dogs - in the photo of her lying down she looks like my old dog who is also a rescue. There is absolutely no knowing what is in my girl but she does have the beagle voice like yours.

In the photo with the children you can see the greyhound/whippet build can't you. Whatever she is I think she is gorgeous and she looks so comfortable being the centre of attention with the children there.

Cigwyllt, Thank you.

I too thought whippet possibly, but thought she may be too small.

She was a rescue from Alabama and is such a sweet girl. I can't believe she would have been euthanized if the group from Alabama had not pulled her out.

Happy New Year to you.

Talking Welcome to the forum!

I am agreeing with you--I think beagle and Italian Greyhound too--Her weight is kind of in between those 2 breeds so that fits good and she does have the looks of both of these breeds.

And yes, you do have a beautiful family---Lol, that pic should be enlarged and framed--if you haven't already done so---Maybe you used it as a Christmas card too!

Curious about Ruby--If part Italian Greyhound--the temperament as described in my book on breeds: As it tends to be timid and must be handled very gently, this is a pet for a quiet household where there are no lively children. In stressful situations it needs constant reassurance by stroking.

And on the other hand--here is what it gives for the temperament of the Beagle: Beagles need firm handling as they are strong willed and not always easy to train. When they pick up an interesting smell, it is sometimes hard to get their attention. Alert and good tempered, they are rarely aggressive and love children. Indeed, they crave companionship.

Did you get a good blend of these 2 temperaments and have the ideal temperament?! Sounds like a good blend for you if the Beagle temperament tones down the timid nature of the Italian Greyhound! And maybe the Italian Greyhound keeps the Beagle part a little easier to train and not be too strong willed. What do you think about your Ruby!?

Here is a link to description and a few pics of the Italian Greyhound--esp. note the 2nd pic! Be sure to scroll all the way down as ads get in middle and is misleading.

Hi Corky/Max,

Ruby is a really sweet dog, she is pretty laid back like a beagle. When we first got her she was a bit anxious, but her whole world was also turned upside down, coming from Alabama to New Jersey. She has definitely come out of her shell with us, but is still quite wary of strangers. When she goes for her walks she is constantly sniffing or I guess tracking and wants to go after the squirrels. She can run really fast like a greyhound and loves to sleep under the covers in my bed.

She is very good with my kids, but I think when it gets to be too much for her she will go to a quieter part of the house. She is also quite a jumper and I have to be careful not to leave food out even on the kitchen counter because she will try to jump and hit it off with her paw if it is close to the edge.

Overall though, I would say Ruby has characteristics of both the beagle and greyhound. She is a very sweet and loving dog, loves to lick faces.

Thank you regarding the photo with the kids, and that photo was our Christmas card.

Happy New Year!

I have a friend with a puggle and when you put them together you can see the difference. I had also thought maybe a beagle/dachshund, but her body type is taller and leaner than a dachshund. Maybe I should do a DNA test, but I have heard they are not very accurate.

it seemed to me as though she was a puggle maybe becasue she is not standing in the pics, but after reading your answer i went back to look the pic again and I just cant tell then, other than she does has the beagle!

Anyways, Ruby is adorable!
Regarding the DNA, i have not idea about it. I'll do some research to inform myself about the topic. Well, not about dog's DNA.
