Default ID this mix?

I found this mixed puppy at the end of my driveway and have since taken him in. I have been needing a good bird dog (for waterfowl retreiving) and since he looks part lab I figured he might be able to be trained to retrieve.

He has whitishness running from his snout to his stomach, white topped back feet, and a white tipped tail.

What a sweet puppy - he looks very young. How can anyone lose a pup like that and not move heaven and earth to find him! Have you taken him to the vet to check that he is not micro chipped?

I would think it is too soon to have any idea what he could be but whatever breed he is there is no reason why he should not be a good gun dog. I know of Jack Russells that do the whole lot - beating, retrieving, tracking. Not suggesting your pup is a Jack Russell of course but if he is keen to please no matter what his breed he could be just the dog you are looking for.

I think my first course of action (if you have not already done so ;o) would be to call your local humane society, SCPA or other similar organization and make sure that there isn't someone desperate to find this little darling. I just have to say that because I have lost my dog before and I know what it feels like to have some wonderful person pick them up and call the pound where we were able to be reunited... But, having said that, my dog originally came to me as a "stray" when she was approx 12 weeks and after searching for the owners and her not being claimed I then made the decision to keep her, so I also know the position your in! ;o) If this little pup is indeed meant to be yours then I congratulate you for a great find! He is Very adorable!

As for the breed, definitely looks like there is a lot of lab in there but as cig said he is still much too young to tell yet. please keep us updates with more pix as he grows.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Also, just to add some extra info, I live in a rural part of the country. My two closest neighbors - each about 500 yards away from me, have not gotten a new puppy. The chances of this dog making it from any other person, the closest being over a mile, is very unlikely. I have a strong feeling he was dropped off at my driveway because he was not wanted.
