what is she??
This is my 8 month old proclaimed 'beagle-mix' May B. I have lots of guesses on which breeds she favors....but unless I give in and get a DNA test (and that's no fun!) I figure I'd throw the question and picture out there and see what guesses I get. I've narrowed it down to beagle (coloring) Jack russell (she loves spinning in circles, she's very energetic and very very smart) and papillon (fanned white-tipped tail, brown eyes with a black outline, and a scissor-bite)...she's very ALERT all the time....she hears every little noise. she loves to dig and she's a pro-jumper. So....any guesses?
-Megan and May B.

She is really beautiful. I can definitely see Jack Russell in her. She is big for a Jack (and huge for a Papillion) and I would have guessed Jack and Border Collie -both highly intelligent, energetic, alert dogs.
It can be hard to tell from photos but her coat looks quite silky - not rough or short like a JR, more like a collie (or a Papillion of course)
The first dog we had as a family when I was a child was a JR Papillion cross and she looked like a Jack Russell with curly ears.

Welcome to the Forum!
I think I see some Beagle. How much does she weigh? If she weighs more than 25#--Most likely a larger breed mixed in---A Border Collie female is averaged at 27 to 42# (sure a big range-27 -42#!) But I can only guess to the Beagle as being part of her make-up. Can you give her height--from top of shoulder down?

it's hard to measure her, but from trying to measure I'd guest-imate about 15-18 inches. She's about 13-15 lbs. Her coat IS very soft, and she has a light colored thick undercoat. Boarder collie was actually another guess that I had had, but Papillon came into play when I noticed her tail was about as long as her body, curved up, and fanned (along with the white tip)...and also the unique 'scissor-bite' teeth. I adopted her from the SPCA about 3 days after a puppy mill raid (hence why I think she's more of a hybrid-mix), and before I give in and get a DNA test done, just wanted to know what other people thought. Trying to get a better photo of her, but she moves so much it's very difficult to get a still-shot haha! Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it!!

Lol, the weight and height didn't help me much--definitely not as heavy as a Beagle---height is not bad for a Beagle though. But in looking at your pics again--and you are going to be surprised----that pic where you are holding her with the side view of her head----reminds me of a Dachshund head!--But that is the only thing--just the head. If I had to guess--I would say possibility of Jack Russell/Dachshund/not sure about the Beagle anymore! It sounds like maybe some Papillon from what you said but I am not seeing a pic of the tail or a side view of the whole body so I can't really say that breed. Lol, you do know there could be several breeds combined there!!---not just 2 or even 3!
From what I have heard--those DNA tests are not very reliable either.

Thanks for the new pics. I would not guess any Papillon at all. She sure is a mystery though!! But she does look like a lot of fun! I am going to give here --a link to a very good site that shows a lot of pics and descriptions of all the dif. breeds including mixed breeds. Maybe you will get some ideas there. Lol, I was just going to get off the computer for a while (Been on all day!)--my 2 dogs are 'bugging' me for their supper!

that's a border collie mix, for sure. tricolour BC would account for the colouration as well as the ticking. check out the baby at

the spinning - my dog's a border cross and he does that ALL the time.
i don't see beagle (much more robust build) or papillon at all.

I was almost certain that she was a jack-a-bee, but after the last couple months (she's only 9 months old, by the way, couldn't remember if I'd mentioned that) I just started noticing different characteristics that didn't mesh with the two breeds....so who knows? there might be 2 or 3 other breeds mixed in there! She's definitely one-of-a-kind...weird, goofy, and she's about to bust with personality, not to mention she's the smartest dog I've ever encountered (and I'm not just saying that because she's my dog...by the time she was 3 months old, she knew 6 tricks, and she was house trained-besides 1 or 2 rogue accidents- since she was about 4 months old) and I want to think everyone for their input. Definitely needed some outside opinions. And any more guesses from different points of view will continue to be appreciated.
*THANK not think....sorry about that! haha
