definitely not for the faint of heart or 'soft' dog owner. dont let that cute little face and body fool you! but they can be the most loyal and awesome pet ever.

i'd love to own one some day. i always love a good challenge.

Default Shiba Inu Dogs

We own a Shiba Inu. She's three years old and I love her to pieces. She is the perfect dog in the house; doesn't bother anything that isn't hers.

If you like cats but can't have one for some reason or other, a Shiba Inu is the dog for you. They are very cat like; the bathe like cats, play with toys like cats, are aloof like cats.

They shed badly twice a year because they are double coated.

Outdoors they are a totally different story. We can never take our Shiba into the front yard without a leash. It's that way with all Shibas they tell us. She will not come when called once off leash (except in the house). Thankfully we have a fenced backyard and we can let her run loose there.

We talked to some people before we bought her and they had had one for 9 years. They had company come to the front door and the dog shot out the door when they opened it and was hit by a car.

Thankfully our Shiba walks very well on a leash. She also travels very well and since there are so many hotels that allow pets now, it works out great.

Oh, she also doesn't bark. She yips once in a while, yawns out loud and even burps after eating, but we have not heard her actually bark in the three years we've owned her.

She loves cold weather and was enchanted by the snow the one time we actually had some that she could play in. When it was all gone the next day, she looked at us like "What did you do with it?"

Except for not coming outdoors when called, she's the perfect dog for us.

I've been lurking in this wonderful forum for a few weeks but today I registered because people were talking about my wonderful Shibas! I actually registered under his name (Shogun) -- he would appreciate that I've had Shogun for almost 3 years and I'm still learning about him. I did my research, thought I asked all the right questions but you know all that knowledge went right out the window when he arrived. He arrived from Montana on Delta airlines and when they brought his crate out he was immediately surrounded by airline personnel wanting to know what kind of animal he was. Was it a bear cub, fox cub, puppy Akita? Not a peep out of him, in fact he rode all the way home and didn't make a sound. Once we were home I opened his door and he ran out, put on brakes, looked around and stared at all of us (staring at him). After calling to reassure his breeder that he was safe and sound I fed him and took him out for his first walk - with a collar and leash. That's when I heard the infamous "shiba scream" (I thought he was having a seizure). You Shiba folks know what I mean.

Hi, I have a shiba and think that He's great, not a barker, but is still a good watch dog, loves to snuggle but also likes to entertain himself, but definetly not a breed for the first time dog owner.

I think Shiba Inu's are very cute dogs. I'm not sure if I would ever own one though. Not that I don't like them, I'm just not sure they would fit into my lifestyle.

I had a Shiba-Inu! Loved him! At first he was stubborn and difficult to train, and really wild as a puppy, but tons of fun, and loyal!!

Default new to breed

My wife and I are very interested in this breed. How much does a shiba typically cost and when are puppies usually available?

We live in the San Diego area and have additional questions- especially about crate training and the best way to train this breed.

Here is the Shiba website: National Shiba Club of America

They have a lot of Shiba clubs in CA - you shouldn't have any problem.

Well I had my first Shiba for 13.5 years ... He was called Itoh & was a real Gent of a dog .. Sadly I lost him back in April aged 14.5 yrs.
I have now got a new Shiba .. a 5 month old dog ( I've had him for 3 months)
His name is Tarka (short for Takara) He is very much an Alpha Male & likes to strut his stuff even at this early age... I certainly know I've got him .. definately not a dog for the faint hearted ! lol
But he's gorgeous if not a handful ! .. they make fantastic pets, they are so clean in the house, they play lots but can also be quiet dogs ..
They only bark when there is something to bark at .. never ignore a barking shiba .. they're telling you something you just might want to know !!
Tarka believes that 'everything' in the house is his ... can be kind of tricky at times !
Tarka's main problem is his ears .. they do not stand straight up ! ..hmmmm !!! (anyone with experience of this ?)

Did you know our Shibas are now 65th on the AKC list of dogs. We must take care and not let them get to popular -- must keep the secret to oursekves.
