Default Maltese Shih Tzu

We have 2 dogs, one of which is a Maltese Shih Tzu cross, named Benji.

I am very very impressed with how easy it has been to train him and teach him new tricks, particularly with the incentive of a treat to follow. The neatest trick has been getting him to put his toys away (back into the toy basket). It only works if he thinks there is a treat coming his way.

If Benji is anything to go by, I would say that the breed is very intelligent.
But they do love their food so we have to watch his weight.

Benji, with his cute ways, has been the inspiration behind many of my dog character illustrations.

How do you go about teaching them to put their toys away. I saw another dog that would do this a long time ago and always thought it was such a neat thing for them to do (in more ways then one) - Would love to know how to teach this trick! Thanks in advance for your help.
I was owned by a maltese for 13 years. She went to the Rainbow Bridge this past May. I still miss her and always will. I also have yorkies, shih tzu, and a collie.

That is so cool. Benji is one neat dog! And I bet he is cute too. I love the breed but isn’t it hard to keep their coat white? It’s not too appealing if there are lots of water marks.

GG, you are pretty talented! Your drawings and tees are nice. Benji is a good inspiration.

Pupplylove17, it must have been hard for you. 13 years is a long long long time. I am sure that you miss her so much. I’m sure that she is happy playing with other dogs now :-)

Thank you for your kind words. It was hard to let her go and I will always miss her. She was a small one. Usually weighed around 4 1/2 pounds. I usually took her everywhere I went. I loved to watch her dance on her hind legs.
Maltese are beautiful dogs. Very loving. She was always happy just to be where I was. Their coats are not hard to care for if you groom regularly but regular brushing and baths is a must. They are prone to mats if not brushed regularly. I had a deal worked out with a groomer and later with my vet where I took her in weekly for grooming and she always looked snow white. She always wore a bow or two in her hair.
I would love to have another one someday but just not ready yet. I went to see about getting one a few months after she passed and the puppy was cute but I just choked up and knew I wasnt ready yet. I currently have yorkies, shih tzu, and a collie.
Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy!

Default Maltese..

Oh I was able to hold once a 2 month old Maltese, he was sooooo cute and sweet, but then my friend ended up buying a Shih-tzu instead due to monetary concerns ;-)
