Crotch Sniffing
It sounds funny, but it's quite embarassing. My dog Rocky stands on his hind legs and sniffs the crotch every guest that comes to our house. Why does he do this and what can I do to stop him?

Crotch sniffing is a completely normal friendly greeting ritual among dogs. If you pay close attention to dogs greeting one another you will notice that dogs often greet by sniffing each others mouths and then moving on towards the genitals and/or anal region. Scent provides dogs with important information and certain areas of the body are abundant with pheromones, which makes them the most ideal places for dogs to sniff.
The best way to prevent your dog from doing this to visitors is to teach him an alternative greeting behavior that is incompatible with crotch sniffing, such as sitting or carrying a toy in his mouth. In the meantime, you can manage the situation by having him leashed when visitors arrive while you work on training him. Guests can be instructed to ignore the dog unless he is sitting (or has a toy in his mouth).

We have similar problem with one of our chuchus, but he loves to sniff the anal region though, only he will do that when a guest is about to leave the house, we're trying to stop him from doing this but to no avail, he's often faster than us, before we could stop him, he's there behind the guest already.

Lol. My moms dogs do that.. all 3 of them. I don't have any suggestions, though. She hasn't been able to stop it..and I think people are used to it by now.
They know what to expect. lol

Both of my yorkshire boys do this whenever strangers come into our house! I would say this is completely normal. Yes, it might be embarrassing and weird for the guests but this is dog's nature to sniff in the crotch area! LOL
I had my mom's friend come into our house and I guess she was on her period...well, my yorkie boys started going crazy! Yikes! They can be very strange but I love them to death!

Actually every dog I ever owned in adolescents and adulthood automatically knew when a woman was menstruating........its quite weird in my opinion, but dogs either male or female seem to be quite aware of this when its happening.

It's not weird whatsoever.... Woman menstruating is basically in dog talk, Heat.
When we bleed, we're in heat. So dogs of course find this much more interesting than normal people. That's just how it is lol

yeah it is a little weird to have a dog smell your crotch.. but its best if you just let them do what they want.
they are dogs not humans and they have their own way of welcoming you/finding out who you are.

I always had that belief! But I never really investigated it. Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that! it is definitely something to research and learn more about!

Crotch sniffing is funny! My two boys do not do this though. Are they normal? Haha. My fur ball loves to hump though. But he doesn't do that to our guests. Thank God!
My friend's dog likes to smell the girls. It is quite embarrassing for me, and not the owner.

That's why you buy short dogs. This was obviously not a problem with Shih Tzus and Cocker Spaniels.
