Anxious Dog? Try essential oils
Aromatherapy works just as well on your pets as it does on people. If you're dog is anxious, and you don't want to use drugs, you can try aromatherapy.
There are two ways to use the oils: put a few dlluted drops on your fingers and rub the oil on between their toes or on their ears or diffuse near the dog. If you are concerned about the dog licking the oils, then place the drops on the inside of the ears.
The same oils that calm people will calm an anxious dog. Two good oils are lavender and chamomile. A wonderful blend that I found is called "Peace and Calming" from Young Living.
If anyone wishes to know more, I would love to hear from you either in this forum or by private message.

I have tried giving "Rescue Remedy" to Phoebe when there is a bad thunder and lightning storm; it has had a little positive effect on her, but she still is anxious.

I am not familar with Rescue Remedy, so I looked it up. The flower essences in Rescue Remedy are not as strong as essential oils. The oils are far more concentrated and have a larger effect.
I have found that the essential oils used for similar problems (cuts, anxiety, insect repellent) in people work the same on pets.

But keep in mind that you are dealing with a far bigger breed than I am (a terrier)... so the same dose of Rescue Remedy I give my terrier might only cause your dog to slow down for half-a-second.

Please be careful when using essential oils on a pet. Some of them can burn, and others can be toxic, especially to cats. Our pet's livers don't function the same way ours do, and some essential oils can cause liver damage. And also keep in mind that a dog or cat has a much more sensitive nose, and the aromas can be overwhelming to them.
An alternate to essential oils is DAP; Dog Appeasing Pheromones. You can get it as a "plug in" or as a spray.

Vetgroomer, i was going to mention the same caution, I noticed that one of the OP mentioned rescue remedy, this is a good start, but the RR is just a broad mixture designed for quick releif and appeasmant, you can actually have made up more specific issue remedys that can be more effective than the for emergency rescue remedy........
local homeopath can assist in a custom designed product, based on the same or other flower essences in rescue remedy which can be more effective.
We have a thunderstorm, lawnmower, loud tool scared dog, who becomes quite stressed when all these things are going on, we have had specific formulars created that have worked much more effectively than the rescue remedy alone.
The advantage of the flower essences, they are completely safe for ingestion or application to skin etc with no risk whatsoever, adult, furkid, baby/child, plant or even fish.
I will not dismiss the use of essential oils, they too can be wonderful but there are many more cautions to be aware of with them, and it really important to know what each oil is to be used for, and know what can go wrong before beginning use. example of just one being lavender oil is not meant to be used by or around pregnant women as it is a uterine stimulant. without research, it could be likely you could not recommend lavender oil around any species that may be pregnant.....just things to keep in mind anyway.

Essential Oils
Hi,
Fighting disease with essential oils is not a new concept. In fact, throughout the world, and throughout the ages, people depended solely on such preparations to do so. You can get more information from www(dot)essentialoilsonline(dot)co(dot)uk.

Essential Oils
Hi,
Inhaling essential oils is believed to offer both physical and psychological benefits. The aroma of a natural essential oil stimulates the brain to trigger a reaction. You can get more information from www.essentialoilsonline.co.uk.

Essential Oil
Hi,
In aromatherapy, essential oils play an important part. Only a particular essential oil is used for a particular treatment and is very important in curing the ailment. In order to get a good quality essential oil at a competitive price, a little online research is helpful. You can get more information from Essential Oils Online: Pure Aromatherapy Oils and Essential Oil Products.
