Default A taste for carpet

In the last year and a half my dachshund has developed an occasional taste for carpet. Every once in a while I will come home and find a spot where some carpet threads were torn up. This is strange because the dog is nine years old, and just developed the problem a year ago. Really, I see the whole thing as an excuse to replace the carpet with hard wood floors. Still, though, I find it odd that my dog would develop a problem like that at such an age.

My dog is very comfortable in the carpet. Infact, he spent most of his time in the dinning are. He lied down in the carpet all the time. One time I planned to dry clean my carpet, I observed that my dog was not at ease. He never lied down the floor without the carpet. Maybe dog have different taste in life just like humans.

Sounds like he is bored. Maybe try and give hime some new things to play with or wear him out a bit playing a little extra before you leave for an extended time to get rid of some of his extra energy.

vinsta has a good point, but GSD Princess started that at 6 yrs. and I rented a powerful carpet cleaner, and the problem went away. Remember a dogs nose can smell even a drop of flavored water!

That is really unusual. I have had puppies do that but not older dogs. Now one of mine licks the carpet and she has a pillow that she licks too. Just that one pillow but the carpet in the kitchen and bath are her favorites to lick. My vet said that they eat grass because of a deficiency in their diet, maybe the same thing is true of carpet? I don't know but I tend to agree with it maybe being boredom or something spilled on the carpet.

I had the same problem but again, only with puppies. It has stopped by the age and when it didn't I used a special program in my vaccum machine to get rid of odours.

That is odd. Usually puppies do that kind of thing. Maybe he's having a second puppyhood? LOL

Weird that an adult dog chose to eat carpets. Once they grow up, they usually lose the urge to chew.
