Default Older Dogs Suckling?

Why do my dogs, at times, bunch up a fuzzy blanket and suckle with it? Yeah, they gather a whole mass of the blanket in their mouth and will even do the paw pushing thing. Now we are talking about grown dogs. It makes me think they are insecure, but I don't know why. I stay at home, they are loved individually and en masse, they are well fed, get treats, have a doggie door to a huge outside fenced-in yard, lay wherever they want to and are all trained AND spoiled rotten. My vet says they are all healthy, happy, and well-adjusted.

Now, all my dogs are rescues. Could this be from something in their past that I don't know about? When my second rescue, Cubby, started doing it, I figured it was because he was taken from his mother too soon -- his history told me this, he was found as a 3-day old puppy.

But the others? Both Maggie and Abraham do this. Now all they knew about Maggie is that she was found starving at the side of the road when she was 4 months old. Abraham, too, was abandoned. Could this be it? I've had them both for over 3 years now. I would hope they would know that I would never abandon them and that I love them to death. They seem to like to do it right before they go to sleep.

My mothers 4 yr old Poodle suckles on his stuffed dog toy all the time. I don't think there is anything wrong with this, I just think its a comforting behavior...something they engage in while relaxing or trying to relax because it makes them feel good.

I don't think there is a thing wrong with adults dogs that suckle on things. Now maybe if it was something harmful...My sister had a dog that sucked on stuffed toys. He would suck on them until they smelled and looked pretty well used, but he loved them. I don't know what causes it, but your dogs aren't the only dog who do it. Just keep loving them I guess in spite of it.

My dog suckles as well, right before he goes to sleep. I asked the vet about it and she said it's a common behavior for some dogs, and it's okay if he does it as long as it's with something that will not fall apart or in pieces. My dog was not a rescue and I know that we didn't get him til he was almost 10 weeks old. He may have been the runt though and he could have been in some sense "taken" from his mother to soon causing him to feel insecure or something. All the same he has blankie and we still love him.^_~
