chewing puppy...
hello,
I have a 10wk old puppy, which i have had for bout 2 wks now... the only real prob with her i have found is that when we play with her or even try to pet her for that matter she wants to chew on us... I know she is just a puppy and she is teething which is a factor... when she does this we tell her no bite or easy or if we are just trying to play with her we get her one of her toys to play with which help... Im not complaining as i know chewing comes with the puppy.. haha i just wanted to make sure that i was going about correcting her in the correct ways... my husband tells me to not hard but tap her on the nose and tell her easy, but ofcourse that wont work and that just makes her want to play more... so I dont do that... my main concern with this is i have 2 children 4 and 6 and they dont quite understand that she just wants to play and doesnt know that she is actually hurting them with her sharp teeth.... so i thought i would ask is there anything else i can do to teach her not to chew so hard or not at all?? either would be great... i cant think of anything else...she has seemed to settle a bit as the past few wks has gone by as she is starting to adjust and learn her limits... but i still thought it couldnt hurt to make sure i am doing all that i can to teach her to not be soo rough...cause shes not bitting she just chewing, just pretty hard sometimes...ha ha...

When our GSD came home, he was 12 wks. and had been one of 10 in the litter, there were still 5 left. He would chew, and we would say No biting, remove what he wanted to chew on stop all play and give an acceptable chew toy and say Chew on this. Pretty soon, just no biting find the toy, and things got better. When he got into his teens, for some reason, he again wanted to play bite or chew on us. That is when we got alittle rougher, again, in a growly voice, No biting, but now he had on a training collar, with a tab, a ft. long lead. After no biting, if it didn't stop, the word enough, and a quick tug, and the command down. Of course play time again was over. He had to stay down until he was released. That worked very quickly!

Our golden Lab is a year old this month sometime (aww christmas pup!) he doesnt chew so much when we are around, more just when we leave, just when we think we have cleared everything out of the room that he would chew, he finds something. yesterday we came home only to find he had chewed the christmas cataloge from sears into 3 million peices, witch didnt seem to be enough for him, he desided to chew the corner off my coffee table... ! other ocasions it was cd's, books, and pens!
he only does it when we leave him alone, like if we go to work or shopping or somthing, we can;t leave him out side because he barks and the neighbors complain, we were thinking about clearing out our spare room and putting him in there when we left, or getting him a big kennel to be in when we arnt home, but if anyone has another sugestion to help us too that would be great!
When he bites us (never hard) we just saw OW and pretend we are hurt, that worked a little bit but we have to say Ow everytime he puts his mouth on us to bite us (he never would bite, just puts our hands in his mouth, withour clenching down)
