Default Shocked & Bewildered

Hello,

My name is Wendy and I am new to this forum. Our 8 week old male Malti-Poo started humping his doggie bed last night. We were horrified! Is this *always* a dominence thing? Do we need to establish more Alpha in our relationship with him?

Would early neutering help?

Would behavior mod help?

All we did was clap our hands and say, "No" -- are we on the right track? Is our teeny little canine doomed to be a 'humper' his whole life??

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Wendy

No, this is not a dominance thing, it is a puppy thing. Why were you so horrified? All male dogs will go through this phase. In my opinion he is too young to be neutered. Just distract him with a toy when you see him start this. But don't act like it's the end of the world or you will end up with a very mixed up dog. it is a natural dog thing, no reason to be upset.

Default Puppy Humping

Hi Shelley,

I guess the shock was from what our vet said. He said, "Well, some dogs are just humpers." Thinking that may be the case (this is only my second dog and I had never seen my previous male do this) caused more disapointment than *shock*. I have been to peoples homes (twice) where it was (both times) a miniature male poodle that as soon as I sat down on the couch ... he started humping my leg. One dog ejaculated on my leg before I could get him off.

Thinking our new puppy might be like this was very discouraging. Hence me seeking out this forum.

So you don't think it's a permanent thing eh? That would be great. He is super in every other way.

Can I ask how long they bite all over you? We are trying to redirect him when he does, or when he really bites hard, we say "Ouch!" ... is this what we should be doing?

Thank you,
Wendy

Helly's advice is absolutely excellent, you should really follow that! Everything she said, I was going to write, but as usual someone got there first, this forum is soooo great!
