...lays down to sleep?

Typically this is done to flatten the spot and also lay down their own scent to possibly mark their territory.It is likely an instintual habit of wild dogs that has continued even with todays domesticated breeds.

Alot of animals do this, Deer come to mind, they are making their nest, or bed, or whatever. They just want to be comfortable before finally going to sleep.
