Default Starting to lift leg

Hi my shih tzu has just started to lift his leg when he pee's and was wondering if it is normal that he basically gets it all over his belly area? Does lifting his leg to pee need practice or what? It is kind of gross.

I think some dogs are just better coordinated than others but I'm sure body shape and size could also be a factor. Is your Shih Tzu young?

I notice that some dogs don't usually lift their legs when they pee on flat area like grass. I also notice they lift their leg when they pee on post and bushes. I guess, when they want to hit the target they lift.

Usually if it is a male dog and not neutered they lift their leg. I have 2 males that were fixed a 6 mos and they squat, (both big dogs 1 65lbs 1 55 lbs) but I have a male boxer that only lifts his leg but he was neutered as an adult. I have heard that when and if they are neutred has something to do with it but I am not sure.
