Default Dog jumping the fence.

Hello,
I have a three year old lab/shepard mix who recently has been jumping our fence in the backyard. He doesn't really wander off he will just walk around the neighbors yard then come back. Im not sure what I can do about this. I have been letting him out only on a leash. Does anyone have any advice the this matter? It would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Default it's normal to a dog

Jumping over the fence is an activity that a dog loves to do. Maybe he sees something on the other side of the fence and he wants to run after it. Dogs love to chase. To avoid the jumping of your dog over the fence try to go along with him, walk with him for instance so that he will realize that there is another way other than jumping over the fence.

My first dog was a fence jumper, and a behaviourist told me it was because he'd spent so much of his life in the pound--confined in a tiny space, the only way he'd had to burn off energy was to jump really high!

We had success with walking around the fence, as recommended by another responder. He could clear a 6' fence, and often _climbed_ the fence if necessary.

We also noticed that he tended to jump the fence more at particular times of day--such as when our neighbors walked their dogs! The solution was simply to keep him out of the yard at that time.
