Agression towards new puppy
I have 3 labs, female 10 yrs, male 6 yrs, and female 5 months.
The day I brought the puppy home 3 months ago the male snapped and
attacked her. I quickly separated them, and have taken pains to keep
them apart. About 4 or 5 times over the past 3 months the puppy has
gotten too close to the male, and he again reacts with the snapping
and agression. At times, they can pass within several feet of each
other without incident. However, generally I keep the male tethered
or on a leash when the puppy is around, and she will keep her
distance.
The male gets along fine with the older female, maybe once in every
several weeks a bark from the old female when she's laying down and
doesn't want to be disturbed by the male. I have no fear of leaving
the two of them alone, unseparated in the house all day. I'd fear for the puppy if left alone with the male.
Incidently, the puppy worships the older female, and follows her
licking and jumping around constantly. The only incidents have been
one or two times when the old female has a treat and the puppy
bothered just a bit too much, and received a "Mama Dog - don't bother
me" type growl, not real agression, and the puppy backed off.
Any suggestions on how to proceed.
Thanks for any help given.
