Default Shi-Tzu cross German Terrier

Hey guys, I'm in desperate need of help!

Ok, my shi-tzu cross has just turned a year old & has a problem with peeing!...I crate trained him when he was a puppy & found that he always peed on any bedding I gave him, I just thought it was cause he was a puppy so I took his bedding away & thought I'd wait till he was atleast a year, hoping he would grow out of it. He sleeps in my kitchen now without a crate & still without bedding. Now, when I'm in or if I go out he never pees or poops on the floor as he's always playing outside before I go out & has plenty time to do the toilet. But as soon as I give him a blanket or bed (cause he gets cold sleeping on the floor), regardless of me being in or out he'll pee all over it & sleep in it!!!.....I have no idea why he does this. I can't even let him run about my house, as soon as i do he lifts his leg & pees on my door frames, plant pots, you name it & then he'll take a poop anywhere he likes!

He knows when he's done wrong cause he cowers as soon as he's done his mess....what can I do to save my dog from going to the pound, my husband has had enough!

Hello,
I would try moving the blankets outside. After each meal take him outside to the blanket soon he will get the point and hopfully go potty outside.

lee I don't understand the logic to that. why would you not just train him to the grass?

is he neutered? if not - get it done yesterday. sounds more like marking his territory than a housebreaking problem.

this is why bedding isn't recommended in crates, it absorbs the urine & defeats the purpose of the crate.

do you walk him at least twice a day? walking stimulates the bowels & will help get him on a schedule

you are going to have to go back to housebreaking 101. it sounds like you may not have had a good understanding of that or crate training. you can google both.

getting him on a set schedule of eating & going out are vital. you should be out there with him & know exactly what he's doing. leash him to you in the house.

Hey!

No he's not neutered, I should go do that!....Once i noticed when he was a pup that he was peeing on his bedding I took it away & never once did he mess in his crate, i took his crate away about a month ago (my neighbour wanted it back, I gave him a blanket & he peed on it, I took it away!)...he sleeps on my cold kitchen floor now with nothing!

He gets fed at 5pm everynight, is out every hour till 10pm & is then out for a pee & poop @ 7am, 8.30am latest!...and then he's out every hour again right up too 10pm!....he's on a very tight schedule & knows exactally when to go ( I made sure of that when he was a pup!) I used to get up 3 times a night to let him out his crate to pee, he had his pee & poop corner & goes on demand! He never pees & poops in the kitchen ever, even when we go out all day. He just has a problem with fabric as soon as his paws touch it he pees on it!...I'd love to give him a bed cause he no longer has his crate and as I say he sleeps on my cold kitchen floor......I think he's marking his terratory, he doesn't mind sleeping in a face full of pee!

My yard is about half an acre & we play ball & chase about 3 times a day, he's happy running round in circles, I watch him he's crazy!...he loves to run @ full speed, round and round the yard, he's such a happy little dog!....just a pitty about the peeing thing cause he loves a blanket!

If your dog pees in the house, and especially since you know he will, watch him closely.

The split second he pees yell "no" and pick him right up off the ground or at least grab him if he's too heavy to lift. The picking up part will surprise most dogs into not peeing anymore while you're holding them, it seems to be a natural response.

Carry him straight outside and wait til he pees or poos, even if it takes forever, then big huge reward.

I've been outsmarted by the odd dog who gets that peeing = treat, so it would pee as often as possible to get a treat!!

Also, spaying or going in the house is often a stress response, is there anything in your life that has changed recently?

Is the dog jealous of anyone/anything? Does your husband dislike it a little in general?

Some dogs are highly sensitive to subtle changes...

If so, some homeopathic drops for stress might help.

since he is not neutered, this is probably "marking" which has nothing whatever to do with housebreaking.

aside from ugly behavioral issues, un-nuetered dogs are at much greater risk for cancer. yes, get him done, he should have been neutered at 5 months.

make sure you have used a good neutralizer on where ever he has peed - vinegar & water works well.

it is better to feed them twice a day
