Question I need information on how to introduce my dog to my new puppy

I have a new Chihuahua puppy and I have been putting off introducing her to my 4y/o Chow mix... does anyone have ANY experiences with introducing either breed. My chow mix is very aggressive but is wonderful with my 3 kids (5,6, and 9) and is outside for the day but inside at night and its getting difficult to keep them apart. My new baby is crated at night and rotated between the childrens rooms. Should I keep it this way for a while or try to introduce them. Im just scared that my chow will kill the chihuahua.

Thank you for any help.

try to introduce them with each other but be sure you are the one or you are there when you introduce them. if you think one of them is ready to attack it's a sign that it's not the right time to introduce them with each other.

hi,
i have an aggressive standard poodle which i have introduced two new dogs too in the last year, the way i did it was to walk the animals together without officially introducing them and then walk them back to my house together as a pack and then let them off the lead without fuss and trying not to worry.
it will not be plain sailing and there are bound to be a few grumbles but it will work out provided you are confident.
i understand this is difficult with such a fragile young dog
goodluck i wish you all the best.
x

pps
i wouldnt wait to long to introduce them whilst they are separated in the same house because no doubt your chow knows the puppy is around somewhere and you do not want to increase unnessary tension between the two.
the longer your chow can smell but not get to the chihuahua the more the animal will become frustrated

Wink 2 cents...

Definately the introduction should be outside on mutual territory, not the chows regular outside area but an outside area that is new to the both of them. It is good to have yourself and another adult, one to walk each dog separately from one another and then gradually get them closer to one another until they are as one with no tension. Hope that also helps a bit. Good luck.

Agree with that lil mutt...I guess one step to introduced them to each other is by doing fun activities and stuff...In that way they can mingle with out having war...

There is a vast difference of muscle power between the two.
They can live together but your fears are well founded, too

I honestly recommend proffessional help of high degree and insight.
I really don't believe I could manage something like this on my own.

You have two females fighting over the same den.... They'll never stop till one is gone

This is very unfair for your older dog.... at the same time the chihuahua doesn't stand a chance

My two females only get together cause the new one accepts the authority of the older one completely and so do I, plus there is no period odour from the new one cause she is spayed. They have found a way to coexist cause the fresh dog always backs off. If my older girl wants something I rush to serve her first.
In my case the older dog is a female Setter and the new one an APBT with a heart of Gold and the muscle of a HeavyweightChamp. She came as a rescue 4 months old. She was treated by the Setter as a baby, though she kept looking at me with strange looks. We are together for 6 years now
I stayed alert a very long time in the beginning to make sure no blood will be shed

They actually figured things out by themselves

You typically want to make the introduction earlier rather than later. Have a person hold one dog on a lead, while you hold the other, and bring them near. If there's any aggression, and you don't feel you're ready to risk handling it, get on the phone with a trainer and have them come by as soon as possible. Let us know how it goes.

It could help if you let them experience good things when they first meet. Let them sniff each other so that you can see if they are ready. Make sure that you use a friendly tone so that they won't get intimidated...
