this is not uncommon behavior and is a dominance issue. I have 13 Miniature Pinschers along with 2 IG's of them I have several that do this with a couple of my cats. I have found more so that it is the female dogs that are not spayed that do it. Of those spayed only one which is the alpha occasionally will. I use a spray bottle to get them to stop and it works fine. One bit of advice, do not use the crate to discipline as it may send the dog mix signals. You want the dog to view the crate as a good place.
