BorderCollie is on a distinguished road
Default Any ideas what to do?

I have a bordercollie just over a year old and I'm just looking for any helpful suggestions. I have never been a single day away from her and I will be going away soon for about 5 days. We can leave her alone for an entire day and she is really great but I'm just worried that she will be very upset when I go. My husband will be here at night when he gets home from work but her days will be long and shes never been away from me. Any ideas what I can do to make her days easier on her or will she even care that I am gone???

hire a dog walker for at least once a day, perhaps twice.

doggie daycare.

leave the TV on - they have special DVD's & videos for dogs

give her something unwashed that you have slept with so it has your smell.

oh she will care - this is an owner inflicted problem

one of my dog is always with me. She never leaves my side and i have the same worries when i need to go somewhere. I just left her some foods and toys and ask my cousin to check on her and she's ok that i am not around.

leave a fewof your unwashed tops in her bed, she will be able to smell you, and she should be better.

She definitely will miss you, but make sure that someone checks on her during the day while your husband is at work, and make sure that he pays extra attention to her when he gets home. Some puzzle toys might keep her busy...kong has toys that you can put treats into, and the dog has to work at it to get the treat out, and keep the tv on...I usually put on something that I would watch if I were at home, so the sounds are the same. Good luck, and be prepared to be smothered with attention when you get home!

Maybe let her sleep with something of your's for the scent, and possibly make a video or voice recording of whatever you tell her when you get home everyday. That way your husband can play it back for her when he gets home. I'm no pro, just a suggestion, good luck.
