Default HELP! My dog is seeing bugs that aren't there!???

I am very worried about my 3 year old miniature schnauzer. For the last two weeks I have noticed some very strange behaviour. It first started happening in the evening. The best way I can explain it is that it was like she was watching bugs crawling around on the floor around her. She would be fixated on it and then it was like she would see another one and be fixted on that one. This goes go on for several minutes. Then she will lay down and start sniffing her legs and paws and licking non-stop. Then she gets up and starts it all over again.

She does not have fleas or mites, and her skin looks good, no hair loss, dryness, or redness.

It's like she sees stuff that just isn't there? This happens when she is on the floor, in her bed, on the coush, on my lap...everywhere.

When it is happening, it's like she can't stop or control it.

I have noticed in the last few days that she has started to do this in the day now too. It seems to get worse at night. Sometimes she gets scared and even starts breathing funny and ven starts panting.

She has had some health problems. She was born with a very small liver and a suspected liver shunt. I have her on apple cider vinegar as she is very prone to UTI's, I also giver her vitamin E and milkthistle to help improve her liver health. The vet seems to feel that the small liver that she does have is working as it should, but cannot say for sure.

She eats 100% organic dog food and no table scraps. I haven't given her anything new so I seriously doubt this is an allergy.

I am starting to think that this is a neurological problem.

I am hoping that someone will come along that has experienced this or a similar problem with their dog and might be able to offer me some advice?
