Dog Training Doesn't Have To Be Difficult
I am a professional dog trainer and a member of the Humane Society of the United States, Association of Pet Dog Trainers, International Association of Canine Professionals and involved with hundreds of animal shelters across the US.
I just wanted to mention something about dog behavior and training. Many owners are getting increasingly frustrated with their pet's behavior and it's resulting in an increase in shelter dogs. After understanding that I cannot help everyone, I've spent my time on forums like this trying to help out as much as I can in addition to an overloaded client schedule.
There are a couple questions owners need to ask themselves when their dog's exhibit unwanted behavior:
1. Does my dog get enough exercise? At least an hour per day?
2. Am I firm and calm with the rules. Dog's don't follow emotional (angry, frustrated) pack leaders?
3. Do I have established rules that are easily understood by my dog? For example, it's okay to let your dog on the couch some times and not other times. They just need something to let them know it's okay like an "up" command.
4. Are you consistent? Your dog looks to you for clues as to what to do. If you are tired, you still need to focus on what and how you are communicating with your dog.
5. Does your dog get enough exercise? I start and end with that question. It's one of the main reasons owners have problems with their dogs.
Remember, exercise, communication and pack leadership are the keys to a happy life for you and your dog.
