Default Second Dog in the House

Hello all,

First of all let me say its so comforting to have found this forum. You all seem to really help each other out.

I have a 3 year old dog named Mischa... she's as mutterific as they come but seems to have a lot of spitz in her. Like a small husky but blonde. I rescued her a while back and aside from the regular puppy problems, she's been great. She does however jump all over people but she's very sweet.

Recently she's become a bit territorial. She isnt welcoming to anyone that walks into the backyard without an introduction which I'm actually pretty glad to have.

I live with my parents and being the impulsive Cubans that they are, they adopted Luna, a terrier mix. Now I'm a die hard animal lover and Luna is adorable but I see that their decision was not well thought out but I pretty much have to live with it.

Mischa and Luna were introduced and got along fine until Luna made her way to my room which is Mischa territory but once we leave the room everything is fine again. They'll spend the whole afternoon outside playing and napping without a problem but I cant seem to bring Luna around my room. My main concern is Luna somehow making her way to my room unattended and disaster ensuing.

It was suggested that maybe I bring Luna into the room when Mischa isnt around but I don't see Mischa being too thrilled about that. Let me know what you all think... all I want is for them to both get along and enjoy each others company.

ok this is a simple one take more of the leader role like make mischa and luna sit outside the room and only let them both in when you feel its read you have to clam your room from her because its not her territory its yours HA you gotta tell her like this my stuff not yours so go sit outside im in control hope this will be some good advice for ya o yeah has mischa ever snapped or attacked luna?

Default Many Thanks

Thanks so much... that seems like something I can work toward with time. I guess I can progressively get Mischa to let Luna closer and closer until she's finally in...

Yes Mischa has snapped at Luna but only when Luna is in her territory...

I know how this will all end... my room full of dirt and dog hair...

Thanks again!

Smile

sorry for the late reply but if she has attacked her like wat are her spots she wont let luna go and like if it is just only a territory thing you should try working her out and try to drain her energy the neg energy atleast but no matter wat it is that you do feeding, walking, sleeping, even playtime you have to be in control of it all because you are her pack leader but at the moment your the follower and she controls you harsh reality but thats the way it is but it sounds like you can do it i belive in you pal i have 4 dogs and they are the power breeds so i know you can do it and be just fine

NO--not work toward--do it. That is YOUR room, not Mischa's. It is your place to decide who is and is not welcome there, not Mischa. Take the role of the calm assertive leader and claim your space. You decide how things are going to go (who's allowed in, who gets on what, etc.) and don't be wishywashy about it. For example, if you don't want dogs on your bed then the rule is "no dogs on the bed" PERIOD...not sometimes yes and sometimes no.

Bring both dogs into your room and if Mischa starts getting aggressive, stop her. Take your hand slightly curled as if you are holding an invisible softball and take ahold of Mischa's neck from above--not tight, not hurting, just an assertive "no, this isn't acceptable". When both dogs are calm submissive, reward their behavior.

You might want to read Cesar Milan's book on being a Pack Leader.
