Default My dog is following me!

My dog follows me from room to room and gets up every time I move. I don't mind if he sits in room with me, or even by my chair, but he wants to be RIGHT next to me, and I'm always tripping over him. He will even push open a door if I close it. He knows how to sit and stay, and I can usually put him on the other side of the room, but sometimes its just nonstop! I've been working on having him put a little more space between us as part of his separation anxiety desensitization. I love my dog and I want him to be around, but I feel like this kind of insecurity is not healthy!

That, my friend, is called a Velcro Dog.
You see, in the mind of a Velcro Dog there is such a thing as Gremlins...
Gremlins can kidnap Humans who get separated from their Dog...
Bathroom Gremlins are particularly evil and must be avoided at all costs--thus the reason Velcro Dogs sit outside the bathroom and cry.
To be loved by a Velcro Dog is a great though at times trying thing.

You can assign a specific location in each room for the dog to go to and lay down. It will take training but they usually will learn to go to their spot in each room. This way, at least you won't be tripping over them.

You can also work on teaching down stays and practice going into another room. At first, stay where the dog can see you. Gradually, work toward the dog not being able to see you --first for a second and then work up in time.

The first day I brought him home he pushed open the bathroom door and laid down on my feet while I was... ahem... using the toilet. Haha it freaked me out. Now I close the bathroom door very firmly. He also tried to lay against me today after we went out in the rain... Not pleasant.

I laugh with you...I'm quite familiar with the Velcro Dog syndrome...including both of my current pack. The instructor for an obedience class Tanner and I just finished told us to play Hide-n-Seek with our dogs as a way of strengthening "come". Well, that's a little hard to do when Tanner seems to know the moment I move a muscle even when he appears to be sound asleep! Leave the room without him noticing? yeah, right! NOT!

Having company in the bathroom....well, so much for modesty!

Kitchen? Surrounded...

Bedroom? One on each side of me...

The Gremlins don't have a prayer at getting me! hehehehe
