Default Dog chews his tags and collar

My dog will work for hours to get his tags in his mouth and bite them. I recently got an automatic doggie door that works using a little transmitter that has to be placed on his collar. Now he works for hours trying to chew the little transmitter on his collar.
Can anyone tell me a good way to try and stop him from getting at his tag and transmitter. The collar fits just right so it is not too loose. Thanks

Hi!

This has me puzzled---What kind of dog do you have? I would think that it would have a hard time trying to get a hold of these tags, etc. Do these things hang a long way down on the collar--can you shorten them? Don't think I'm much help ---Wondering if you could spray something like Bitter Apple on them until he hopefully gives up on what he is doing.

Is there something about this transmitter that might bother him--noise-vibrations,etc? Is there a way of taping these things together so he can't get at them easily----Of course you wouldn't want him to chew on the tape either!
Does he have plenty of chew toys to distract him--Sorry, prob. not much here to help----but I 'is' trying! Give me some feedback!

Try giving a kong that is filled with 'stuff' that he will really have to work at to get the goodies out of--try to keep him busy for a period of time--maybe he will get tired of 'working' at that and won't feel so much like going at the collar.

Default Hello

My dog is a Papillon. The tags are on the smallest ring I could find and the transmitter is flush with his collar. It does stick out about an inch. Winston, my dog, twists and twists until he gets the tags in the perfect place to bite them. Usually just on the side of his neck closest to his mouth. The other night I found him leading himself around the house while biting the tags.

I've had 3 dogs and I have never seen anything like this. I would try the bitter apple but I am afraid to put something like that so close to his face for so long. The tape idea sounds good. I'll try to see if that will work. Maybe if they don't jingle he will stop it. Unfortunatly I tried one of those little pouches that you put on their collar and put the tags in....he bit it off.

Wish me luck. Thanks

Mike, if you take the collar/tags off first, before spraying, and then put them back on, then you don't have to worry about accidentally spraying that stuff into his face.

This is definitely baffling-- I'm sorry, I don't have any bright ideas either.

Default I think he has stopped

OK, it took a little time but I think Winston has stopped biting his tags. Every time I saw him doing it I would try to distract him with something else to chew. He seems to now have gotten used to the sound of the tags and the little transmitter for his door.
Occasionally during play he will go for them but I just turn them around to the back of his neck and give him something else to chew.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

A friend of mine has a mastif, who chews on all kinds of stuff, includeing screws and nails? (wierdoo) anyways the other day i saw her tryign to get her chain ( she was out side tide on a chain) its a big chain to and she got it i think she was tryign to play tug, which she is used to doing with there other dog, only she was out by her self so she was tugging on the bit of chain close to her collar, maybe your dog just likes the tates of the tags?

I have seen this quite often. You can try bitter apple or try using a loud sound (Bag a pot, air horn, whistle, etc.). Everytime she bites the tags make the sound and then praise her when she stops.

How about removing the tag from his collar for a period? Later he may forget it.
