Ask : No Bark on stranger
Hi All, Im new here .... so i really need your assitance ... thanks before.
So this is my case :
I have a golden retriever, he is almost a year old already. But until now he still cannot bark on stranger. I'm asking him to be a guard dog like rottweiller or even pitbull but at least i want him to bark when someone come to our house try to at least alert us.
Usually he likes to run to a guest and hug them even if he doesnt know who he/she is ...
Coz ive seen many golden before, they all bark on me the first time they see me even the second time. But they just never bite and just want to play ...
So what should i do ?? is it normal or is there any method i can do to make my dog bark on a stranger or at least to anyone guest who visit my house ? Thanks a lot

My golden never barks at any one either. She just wants to love on them or play. She barks at birds and stuff in the back yard but thats it.

Consider yourself lucky! My two Tibbies go NUTS when someone rings the doorbell. Even if someone just walks by, they freak out. It's very difficult to open the door and have a conversion with a guest because they continue barking. We're working on it .....
All that said, maybe you could get your dog to ring a bell when he sees someone approaching. I've seen this used to train dogs to signal when they have to go pee. Every time someone comes to thedoor, ring some bells you have draped over the doorknob. Your dog may soon associate the two and ring them himself.
Just an idea!

Golden Retrievers do not typically bark. They actually even greet a stranger with wagging tails. They are not really good guard dogs.

If you want a dog that will bark when someone comes to the door and when they move in the house ,or when you drop something in the house that sounds like a knock , you can borrow my gizzy girl (chihuahua) lol
some dogs just don't bark. Timber my siberian doesn't. he lays there and waits for everyone to come in and still lays there. he won't even sniff them. even new people.
my mom had a dog that never barked. so she would bark when people came and when the door opened. after 6 months she couldn't shut the dog up. so it may back fire some if you try.
just enjoy your dog and put a bell on the inside door so if they open it it will ring.

I wish I had your problem! I, like timber&gizzy, too have a chihuahua that I can't keep quiet. She barks at anyone and everyone who comes to the door - even before they have a chance to ring the doorbell. Golden Retrievers are known for a laid back calm temper. Be happy you have a quiet dog.

If you really want your dog to bark, make barking noises yourself and then encourage your dog to do the same. Once she does bark, use positive reinforcement to drive the training home...
Good luck!

Pooh doesnt bark much either. He is just a year old and he hasnt had alot of training of any kid when we got him so Im trying to teach him to speak which isnt going well. lol But he does shake hands and dances for a treat now.
Pooh wont bark when a staranger comes in the house or even if someone knocks on the door. He just runs to it like hes saying, "Who is it?"
Spanky our other shih tzu we had didnt bark much either. He would only when he knew it was meal time or snack time or when he knew we was going for a ride. I want Pooh to at least "speak" when I ask if he wants to go potty. Still no luck.
My BF said by teaching Pooh to "speak" may back fire on me and since hes not much of a barker why fix whats not broken?

i think it's depend on your dog character or behavior.

My Boston Terrier rarely barks. All of the other Bostons I've met are crazy barkers, but Luca only barks in his sleep. Tiny little woofs. And occasionally if he gets super excited while playing with my cat he'll let out one bark and scare himself silly.

About Golden Retrievers
I know the original 1st post was posted 4 wks. ago and also see the member that posted it hasn't been active in this forum since then---but still want to get my 2 cents in! I have a cocker/golden retriever mix and he will bark at any noise he hears (or growl)---may be the cocker part--I don't know. He doesn't get overly excited--but alerts me mostly with the little growl. What I wanted to do is quote from a book that lists the breed of dog and their characteristics, etc. Quote: Temperment--These are well-mannered dogs with great charm. They are easily trained, always patient and are gentle with children. As a result, they make great companions or family pets. While unlikely to attack, Golden Retrievers make GOOD WATCHDOGS, loudly signaling a stranger's approach. So go figure, guess like someone else mentioned in this thread--It also depends on the individual dog and what he has been taught. Being as they are intelligent and easily trained dogs, should help with that kind of approach to try to teach them.
