Default Frustrated

I have a 51/2 year old Wirehaired Pointer. Great dog, BUT I have one problem. She ocassionaly pees on the rug. She has gone for about 3 months with no peeing then all of a sudden she does it. In this latest bout she peed on the carpet twice in two days. She (MOCHA) definately knows better. Mocha is kennel trained and she likes sleeping in her cage. She has her (occassional) deliberate accidents either in the morning after (I let her out) I left for work or in the late afternoon. Mocha has demonstrated exceptional control over all. A couple of times she has gone as long as 13 hours without having an accident.

ANY IDEAS PLEASE HELP!!!!! MY WIFE IS PUSHING TO GET HER OUT..

I'm no expert, but after looking up things in my home vet book, and it sounds like she is doing this more often lately so that you are getting a little concerned? And what is happening now may not have anything to do with the less frequent accidents in the past. I can't copy here all the things it discusses. And there may be other signs that you may not have noticed in trying to figure it out. BUT I would suggest having blood work or/and a urinalysis done. Like I said ---I can't tell you all the things that may be causing it--and you'd have to have a urinalysis test to rule out whether it is any of these things, anyhow! I will say that if it is something serious (or may not be serious yet)--It could be important to check into it now as a lot of these things could lead to kidney disease and/or failure. I will copy this one paragraph--so you get the idea. QUOTE: Dogs with failing kidneys are unable to concentrate their urine. They have a large urinary output and must drink more than usual to replace fluid losses. If they are not allowed to go outside as often as necessary, they may begin to make mistakes in the house. It is important to check kidney function in all incontinent dogs to be sure the incontinence does not have a medical basis. (unquote) I don't know how long it is between 'potty breaks' and you prob. already know---but a dog should not have to wait more than 8 hrs. to go to potty. As dog gets older, prob. more often.

Just a fact here---If urinating a lot--will be losing a lot of Vitamin B and should have it replaced--supplemented.

Just came back in to tell you another of the things that it could be--diabetes.
I have diabetes myself so know things personally about it. And it was one of the things mentioned in the book too!

I think I would take Mocha and a sample of her urine to see the vet, something could be wrong. I understand your using the 13 hour's as an example to explain but 13 is too long to hold it. It can and may have cause or caused bladder infections or a UTI or something... There are alway's puppy pad's you can put down for her and let her know it's ok to go on them...

I would have the blood tests done also, the peeing could be a sign of diabetes, you can buy the ketodiastix urine dip strips at Walmart etc, this will rule out diabetes if the colors on the strip don't change. Usually middle aged dogs can get diabetes.

Or it could just be a UTI which is cleared up with antibiotics.

Hope this helped.
