Default Springer Rage Syndrome

I'm brand new here and don't know if this topic has been discussed. Probably has. But I have a rescue dog (he was actually picked up by New Mexico Dachshund Rescue, a group to which I belong) named Dandy. Every now and then, for no discernible reason, Dandy goes nuts and bites people. Somebody told me about Springer Rage Syndrome, and it sounded appropriate. Dandy isn't a dachshund. He maybe has one dachshund gene in him from way, way back, but he's basically some kind of mixed spaniel.

I'm going to take him to the vet, but I'd love to hear from people who know about this. Is there some sort of doggy Prozac? All the stuff I've heard and read so far seems to point towards euthanasia. But he's young, and he's basically a calm, non-dominant, docile, loving dog, and It's going to break my heart to put him down (even if he isn't a dachshund). I've been rescuing dachshunds for nigh unto 50 years now, and this is the first time I've been unable to train a dog.

This is killing me. Any input? Thanks. My heart's breaking here.

I have no answers for you. I just wanted to say I am sorry to hear the little one is having such troubles. Hopefully the vet will find a cause and be able to fix it some how.

I am sure someone on here will reply with some helpful suggestions. Welcome aboard. this is a great forum and lots of people have great to superior advice.

keep us posted.

Dear Alice, you are not alone... I have a cocker spaniel that was labeled with spaniel rage syndrom... We been through it all from Prozac, to behaviorist's to private trainor's... NONE OF IT HELPED. We have been told by my vet that they don't deal with his type of problem's and were advised to have him PTS.....

It took me 5 year's to find out what was wrong with chevy but I did... It was his shot's.. He was vaccine damaged.. There is many thing's you can do for this little guy and I will help you in any way I can ....

Chevy is now 9 year's old and he is fine...

If you have an allopathic vet, he or she will never admit that the shot's did this to your pup.....

Only a Homeopath/Holistic can help with vaccine damage if that is what this is.

Default Thanks.

Thank you very much for your input Timber & Gizzy and Chevy & Karen. I live in the middle of nowhere (Roswell, New Mexico), so finding a homeopathic vet might be difficult, but I do think I might be able to find someone. I'm calling the regular vet today to get an appointment, and will decide what my other options after he gives me some tips (I hope, anyway).

This is really tearing me up, and I appreciate everyone's input.

By the way, someone sent me a private post, buy my computer wouldn't accept it. I hate this computer. But if I didn't answer a private post from someone, it's because I didn't get it. If you want to get in touch with me privately, please e-mail me at alice@aliceduncan.net

I don't want to have to put Dandy down unless it's absolutely necessary. He's a loving, sweet dog except when he goes nuts and bites people.
