Older dog to play with puppy
I have a grown huskey/alsation female (Kelly) that I got when she was already grown, I guess she must be around 3 or 4, but I have really no idea. I used to have a black female lab that I got 2 and a half years ago, and she immediately took to Kelly and ignored her slight growling and was just all over her from the beginning. Very sadly she got hit by a car not to long ago and passed away. Kelly seemed lonely and I felt bad leaving her alone when I went to work so I got a new puppy, this time a chocolate female lab. She's a bit more apprehensive that the other one used to be, but she's trying to play with Kelly, and Kelly is just ignoring her.
Will this change in time? Is there anything I can do to make her pay more attention to the puppy? Because now I'm afraid the puppy will be lonely if Kelly keeps ignoring her. She's not aggressive towards her, and tolerates her reasonably well, basically she's just ignoring her.

Hi there,
In December I adopted two puppies, a brother and sister to keep my older dog Taz company.
They were about 8 weeks old and for the first month or so Taz either ignored them or showed them all of his teeth with a warning growl.
The girl puppy never gave up on him though and everyday would try to win him over by bringing him her toys; throwing herself on her back in a submissive way and doing anything she could to get him to play with her. The boy puppy was a little shy and seeing all of Taz's teeth didn't help, so he stayed back.
After about 5 weeks or so of ignoring them and seeming really upset at them being here, Taz finally gave in and started playing! Now it's wonderful to see the three of them romp around. Taz still shows them his teeth and growls when he's had enough but they are friends and I am thrilled.
Be patient -- it may take a while and then suddenly one day, there they are playing!
Good luck!

I think sooner or later, most animal get used to one another. It takes a while, a long while sometimes. but eventually most will at least coexist peacefully, if not be friends. (I know that this does not always happen, though.) My boyfriend has had our cat for 6 years and she had never, ever been around another animal in all those years. We got our puppy in December and he was totally enamorede with the cat and she hated his guts. She resented us for the longest time and refused to be petted or sit by us. Now, 5 months later, they get along well enough. I wouldn't call them friends, but they play together for breif periods and for the most part get along. I never ever thought this would happen, judging by Kitty's initial reaction. Just be patient, your pup will probably come around soon.

I agree with what everyone has said but just wanted to add that your Kelly may also be still grieving over the loss of your other dog and does not feel like warming up to a different dog yet---may take some time but sooner or later they will get use to each other ----a habit thing will happen and then kelly would prob. miss this pup if it had to be parted for some reason or other for a little while!
