Smile Puppy Training

We recently adopted a 9 week old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Indy. Indy is a typical pup, nipping/biting, peeing in the house, but I do see that he is a bit aggressive. I want to ensure are properly training him as this breed does have a tendancy to be stubborne. Does anyone know of a good training resource I can reference for this breed, book or website that would be useful. I don't want to handle him wrong and have other issues down the road.

Thanks,
Christine

Hi cmnapper,

aggression is a normal behaviour by dogs. A dog is a carnivore so don't be upset too early. A book or website can not help you.

A good trainer would be the best solution to work with your dog and give him input for the do's and don'ts.
A good trainer does not use any kind of correction or other equipment that will hurt your puppy.
Take the time and have a look at the different classes and their trainers and if something tells you not to go there, then don't do it.
In the last instance it will be your decision.

A good trainer will take the time to let the puppy learn step by step. It is important not to punish the puppy because then it will lose the will to learn and to do it freely and willingly for his owner. Everything has to do with trust.
When the pup does something "wrong" it is only because the holder has not taught it correctly. Mistakes he makes are only seen from our point of view.
A dog never does anything to upset us, in the dogs eyes all he does is correct and appropriate for each situation.

What gives you the feeling that his behaviour shows uncontrolled aggression and why does it frighten you?
