Unhappy pregnant and dog is over protective

Hello, I'm knew to this but at this point i will try anything. I am 26 weeks pregnant with our first child and i have the best dog ever named Gizmo. He is almost 2 and is a Besion. He is potty trained and listens very well.. well lately he has become over protective of me, at first we thought it was cute, but last night my boyfriend gave me a little tap on my back side and Gizmo jumped and bit him. So now we are thinking this is a very serious problem. Then again today when someone knocked on the door and when he was told to go sit down he bit my boyfriend again but this time he drew blood.... this is not Gizmo. I know that this is mostly because I am pregnant but of course, he is not having this. So any help would be most appreciative! thank you

Hello jlebla2900,

during a pregnacy you are changing a lot. Your body language is different perhaps your behaviour is more carefull and maybe the dog can smell what's going on, because of your pregnancy hormons.

The dog will not know that you are having a baby in a while, but he can notice that something has changed with you.

To me it seems a bit strange that the dog is showing this behaviour "suddenly". I guess there was something before you weren't afraid of, or it did not seem to you like any kind of trouble.

What happened when he came into contact with other dogs? How is his behaviour now?
How is his behaviour in the house when you are alone with him? Is it different to how he acts before? Does he follow you? Who had the prior supervision of the dog, you or your husband? What was/is his reaction when somebody is knocking at the door or comes to visit you?

At any rate there is a change in the hierarchy and your dog lays claim on you.
In this case you need urgent help from a specialist. Your dog has bitten twice so far and the risk to take, by training alone, is too high.

Because through his experiences by using aggression, in certain situations and achieving success, he will re-use this information in the future to get what he wants.
My first advice to you is: buy a muzzle that fits to avoid any further incidents.

How where your reactions to this dangerous occurance?

Whenever a dog's behavior changes drastically, your first step is a trip to the vet to determine if there's a medical reason for the change.

In this case, I doubt it's anything medical, but you really need to rule that out first. If your vet pronounces him healthy and sound, ask for a referral to a trainer who works with behavioral issues.

Without actually seeing your dog, and how he's behaving, it's very difficult to offer any other advice.

Hi, I am also pregnant with our first, only 5 weeks to go!
We have 3 dogs, 1 of which is very protective of me. We found that whenever the dog became jealous of my husband touching the bump we would both stand and turn our backs from the dog, completely ignoring him. We only had to do this a few times before he got the message.
We also stopped the dogs from sitting on the sofa and bed unless invited, because i was worried about them jumping on the bump or baby when it arrives, they didn't like it much but soon learnt. they need to learn they are not the baby of the house any more and your attention will be else where!
Good Luck!
