My dog when called always looks around for something to give me as a gift, this "gift" usually is one of his soft furry toys but if he can't find one of these then he will bring anything such as a bone or a stick. This behaviour is even more pronounce when we arrive home from work or if we have been out of the house for some time.
Whilst we find this behaviour rather amussing and "cute" I am just wondering is there any other cause of this behaviour that we need to be aware of that may need rectifying?

HI! Welcome to the forum.
My Max does this when he gets excited, and always when I come home. He doesn't bring it to me but prances around with it in his mouth. I always thought of it as a pacifier of sorts. In your case, it sounds like he is just happy to see you and is giving you a 'Welcome Home Gift!' I think it is cute too----another member may have something different to say, but I wouldn't see any reason to worry about it being a problem.
My golden does this too, and we also see it as 'Yippee, you're home!!!' He also will growl if he is really excited, like when my Mom comes over (she always has a treat for him) - the growl is just him verbalizing his excitement...

Mine does this also minus the giving it to me... I guess it is their way of expressing how happy they are....
Hug's to your precious pup......
I think many dogs do this. It's a "bonding" thing. You come home and they're recognizing you as belonging. And they're probably also soliciting play, as well as greeting you.
My dogs don't bring me toys, though. They bring me their leashes. That's pretty obvious. "Take us OUT! We have to PEE!"
