Do dogs understand death?
My mom died on the 22nd of June. Both of my dogs have been really affected by it. They kept going into my mom's room and would just sit there and cry...I finally closed my mom's bedroom door. Now, they are both laying outside the door. Both girls appear to be depressed. They both loved my mom. She was always the one to give them treats, especially when I wasn't around to control the amount. My older dog, Bailey, seems to be taking her disappearance particularly hard. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help them? I'm going through my own grief thing so, it is really hard. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my partner of 11 years just before Christmas, and I know how difficult it can be.
I'm not sure if dogs comprehend death in the same way we do. But they certainly miss a family member who is no longer there, be it from death or moving away. My dogs didn't quite react the way yours have, but I know they miss my partner, and went through a bit of depression.
I used Comfort Zone to help them adjust, and it worked quite well. Comfort Zone is a plug in, sort of like an air freshener plug in. It emits dog appeasing pheromones similar to the pheromones a bitch produces when she's nursing her puppies. You can't smell it, but dogs can. It helps them relax and be calm.

Thank you. I've never heard of Comfort Zone. Where would one buy it? I'm very sorry for your loss. It's really hard, isn't it?

Dear Lara's mom, I am so sorry for your loss and for the grief your pup's are also suffering... There is a Homeopathic remedy for grief if you would like to try it... You can get it at your local Health Food Store.. Ignatia Amara 30c If you decide to use it for yourself or your pup's just let me know and I will guide you through dosing...
Prayer's to you and the pup's..

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I'll check my local health food store and see if they carry it.

Dogs understand death and go through a mourning process similar to ours. The big difference is that they don't see the need to "Not feel" their pain. Were they my dogs, I would open the door and let them miss your mother. They will get through it a lot faster if you let them experience it all and finish the grief. Putting it off will not help but hinder the process. They want to be where they experienced your mother and where they can still smell her LIFE. They will process it and maybe in a more healthy way than you or I could.
I am sorry for your loss and theirs. She must have been a great friend to warrant such mourning.

Thank you. I'll try giving them access to the room. Perhaps, they'll get over it faster that way. I hate to see them unhappy.
