| i need help introducing my 2 bostons
i just got a 8 week old puppy and my 3 yr old boston is not being very helpful in welcoming the new puppy.
when ever i have both of them in the room, my 3yr old just stands over the puppy and wont let him do anything and then if he gets him close to anything like my leg or couch he puts his nose under the puppy and trys to nudge him up or flip him. now i know the 3 yr old is being domiment when he stands over him but what is the flipping or nudging?
until i get the 2 to play nice, if i have the puppy out i have the older one in the bedroom or outside then put the puppy in the kennel and let him back into the room.
other times the older dogs gets extreamely excited and trys to nibble on the puppys paws.
well thanks for your time!

When I introduced my 12 year old Border Collie to my new Shorty Jack Russell, I made sure NEVER to leave them unsupervised for the first few days. I made a huge fuss over Bailey (the older dog) for days on end. I made sure that she got all the treats first, got fed first and got my attention any time she wanted it. I also set aside some time every day for just Bailey and I to go to the park together without Lara (the JRT) so that she'd still feel that she still was number one and wasn't being pushed aside. Within no time she realised that having the puppy around meant she got more treats, more walks and all the attention she wanted just as she always had so she accepted the new puppy as a good thing.
I also made sure that when people came over to visit that they greeted Bailey first and if they had treats that Bailey got them first. The mistake people tend to make is to make a big fuss over the puppy which makes the older dog feel threatened and jealous. The dog that was there first needs to have his/her position in the family respected. Bailey and Lara are the best of friends now and it only took a few days. In fact, Bailey is VERY protective of Lara.
This method worked like a charm for me. Best of luck to you!

hi bostonlover,
it is our thinking that the older dog knows that the puppy is "helpless".
You have to know that buying a puppy or take it to our family does not mean that the older dog and the puppy will grow up like a familar pack.
It is a forced contact from the owner. Seen from your dogs point of view the pup is a serious concurrent or will grow up to one.
So he has to show whom the important ressources belong to. The owner will always be one of this ressources.
Normally the dog would not show this kind of behaviour, when it is cleared that everything belonges to the human.
So my suggestion is that your adult dog has too much of everything and has to underline/defend it through the manners he shows.

**update**
well my boys are starting to get along alot better now. i think i was expecting them to get along right away and after having tips and reading some books, that dosent happen all the time.
my older one still trys to stand over the puppy but its more now if he's trying to do something we dont want him too.
and a few times the puppy has tryed to be the domimate one with out the older one really doing much other then run in a circle.
we dont leave them alone together in the room unless the puppy is in his kennel with the door closed.
the puppy likes to steel all of the olders dogs toys and the older dog takes all of the puppys toys lol.
i have a few pics of the 2 together.

haileydinan:
go up to the top in the blue strip and click on dog forum
then look down the left side for which forum you want to post in
click on it
top left corner you will see new thread
good luck--took me a little while to figure out to.
