New dog behavior
Hi, I am new here and have a question. My friend recently adopted a new dog (aprox a year old) from the local animal shelter. The dog is extremely well behaved and listens very well. The issue is walking on a leash. She originally pulled but is getting much better with that. She does however growl at other dogs and bark at people when on a leash. She doesn't seem to do this much unless another dog really gets in her face when off leash. When she is on leash she will growl at almost any dog except mine. When she does my friend tells her no takes her a few feet away makes her sit until she seems calm and then tries again to approach the new dog. If Lucky growls they repeat the process until the other person gets annoyed and leaves. We were just wondering if this is the best approach, is there anything else we should be trying. Any and all advice would be welcome. Thanks

Maybe your dog is really not just used to getting socialized with other dogs. Try bringing him into a dog park or something but don't let him interact yet. Get him used to the sight of other dogs around him. You two can sit on one side and let him do the observing. If he growls just calm him down and make sure everything is fine. Your feelings matter too since they can sense what you feel.

Keep the dog at a safe distance from the people. Take her to walk once a day and try to expose on variety of people.

Hello
Here some tips Tips For New Dog Owners
#Use voice commands to correct; never hit your dog.
Striking a dog only makes him fearful and distrustful of humans. Use a high-pitched voice to praise him when he’s being good, and a low, gruff voice to gently scold (never yell) when he’s misbehaving.
# Learn about dog nutrition and health.
Feed your dog a high-quality dog food for his optimum growth and a healthy immune system. Have him checked out by your vet, and regularly as your vet recommends, to catch any potential health problems early.
# Socialize your puppy.
Dogs who are exposed to a variety of people, other animals, sights, and sounds while they’re young will be less fearful of new experiences as they grow older. Take your dog on car rides to fun places at an early age, so he doesn’t learn to associate a car ride with a trip to the vet!
Thanks
Have a nice time a head

As long as she is barking at people when on a leash you do not need to start the training with other dogs.
Her bigger problem is facing people in addition with no chance of escape because the leash doesn't allow her to flee.
If you do not train to give her safety near by you her problem will get worse.
When she has no other choice in future she will start to help herself by using aggressions against other humans.
Through her barking she shows very clearly that she is overstrained and needs help imediately. She only can calm down and regulate the stress level through barking. But that shows that she has no trust in your leadership.
And as long as she has difficulties to let you sort out any kind of dangerous situations you can not take her off leash.
You can not take the risk that something bad happens.
