Cool Ugh Ugh Yuck Yuck Lab ate most of a water rat...

Good Lord, my 5 yr old lab dog won't retrieve and is afraid of gunshots, but he surely loves to kill small animals. I'm sure this is not the first time he got a water rat in my yard (we live across from someone's fish pond), but this time I caught him. He ran with it in his mouth, shaking it and eating it. I waited for someone else to come home and sent them out to procure it. He led her right to it and laid on top of it. She threw a stick and he ran after the stick. She got the rat in a plastic bag and took it to a field nearby and disposed of it. My yard is fenced. It's an electric fence, so I know he isn't getting out. But they're getting IN.

Question is, he had his rabies shot in November 2008 and I'm a bit overdue, but someone told me he could go 2 yrs without a new one. Will he get rabies? Is it contagious if he doesn't bite? I mean, this dog loves me, kisses me on the lips while I'm sleeping to wake me up (ick) and sometimes sleeps on the bed next to me. I have 4 other dogs. Two were in the house. The third must have hunted it down for him, as she's a natural hunter also. I don't think she got any part of it from him though. He's done this with cats that wander into the yard also. He doesn't eat the cat though. He just runs and shakes it. Do all labs do this? I can't believe him sometimes.

I would take your dog to the vet just to be on the safe side. Rats carry all kinds of germs and an antibiotic shot may be in order.
