I'm sorry I don't really have any advice for you - my own dog is very similar in that he is very bonded to me and nervous of strangers. But I'll be very interested to see what other people suggest to you!

You cannot stop him from doing this.
When his leader is out of sight and he feels unsecure because of strangers, then he has no other choice than to growl, what else could he do?
It is his way to say: stop don't touch or don't come near.

It is absolutely ok, what do you want from your dog? That everyone can stroke him and ignores his individual distance at all? Would you like to be touched and cuddled from "god and the world"? I don't think so. AND it is the dog's right to have the same privilege.

I think u should start with socialization... take him anywhere u can to meet as many ppl as u can. WHen ur dog meets a new person have treats and give the new person a treat and ask them to ask ur dog to sit and then they can give ur dog attention.

When you feel ready go to the places with another person, someone ur dog already knows and stay in sight but let ur friend be the one who is handling the dog.

Lastly ask ur friend to take your dog out with out u.

This is obviously a very long process... your dog needs lots of confidence that even if ur not there no one is going to hurt him.

I socialized the heck out of my dog as soon as i got her i was asking ppl to pet her. She is extremely ppl friendly.
