Lily's mom is on a distinguished road
Default 8 yr old now peeing on Apartment carpet

We gave Lily a forever home in June, she was 7 years old and she had never been an outdoor dog, so says previous owner of 7 years.
When we got her to our apartment she had trouble holding her pee till we got home...even if we were gone only an hour. I spoke with the previous owner and he said if I keep her in a small room with tile floors when I leave she would not go pee. Success! She had no more accidents. She had been holding her pee all night while we slept as well. Just last week she began to pee on the floor while we were home sleeping. No whining no barking just peeing. My husband comes home at about 12:30am and takes her out she used hold it till about 8:00am.
I am sure that there were other animals in this apartment before her and they double layered the carpet instead of pulling the old carpet up...which makes it impossible to clean it properly...the carpet has stunk even after we cleaned it BEFORE she peed.

Another new trait for her is whining at our cat that has been her since before she came. She whines at him when he is coming down stairs towards her and she whines at him when he sits anywhere around her. Our cat is 13 years old and has no front claws and has never had any problems with Lily.

Please help, is she just lonely, needs more us time? More outdoors time...hopefully not a pee trip in the middle of the night, I am restless enough

Default Welcome to the forum!

Not sure what breed(s) your Lily is--She is so black I can't get a 'clear' pic of her! I am guessing some Lab? Anyway she looks big enough to be a breed that is considered at 8 yrs. of age to have entered her senior years. I imagine she was also spayed. When a female dog is spayed--It can gradually weaken the sphincter muscle. Both that and being 8 yrs. old may lead to incontinence. And if you find out that is what is happening--Please do not let your vet prescribe Proin!!! I am giving a link here to a very long thread on this 'killer of dogs'----Please take the time to read it---It may save your dog's life! This crap should be taken off the market!!! There are other things to try that are mentioned in this thread--Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't but at least the dog lives!!! There are 196 posts in this thread so you know it is very important and make sure you note the other names for this Proin--right there in the 1st post for one place.--> Is your dog on PROIN? READ THIS!

Okay that covers one thing it might be. Maybe your dog has a urinary tract infection (or not) I think a trip to the vet is needed to try and find out what the problem may be (Please no Proin!). At her age she is suppose to have a Wellness exam (Senior dogs) at least once a year! Although most vets recommend every 6 mons.
Note that a dog usually tries to hide when it isn't feeling well/sick as it is a sign of weakness to them and other dogs. She may be whining at the cat because of not feeling well and wants the cat not around her if she is sick.

Older age can make her 'cranky' and want to be more by herself as far as the cat is concerned too.

If the carpet does have urine smells--That would be a reason for her to want to pee there too--marking territory! You said she didn't pee on the tiled floor(s)----This could indicate that the urine smell is not on that type of floor because it is easier to get that smell off. And you never want to use any cleaner that has ammonia in it as that is what smells like urine to the dog--Ammonia is in pee! Don't know what you want to do to try and get the ammonia/pee smell out of the carpet (and everything under it) but I am sure Lily will continue to pee there as long as it has that smell--whether she has incontinence or not!

In a nutshell--Think Lily needs a trip to the vet---some blood work, etc. to determine if she has a health problem/disease, etc.

And also find some way to get that urine/ammonia smell out of the carpet or keep her off the carpet! Crate training may help too but I'll leave that to other 'experts' on that subject to go into that with you--I am mostly anti-crating except for a few times when it may be necessary. I even hate to mention the subject as there are too many people who leave dogs in crates for too long a period and for the wrong reasons and I feel so sad for these dogs that are owned by that kind of person!

Hope things work out for you and keep us posted on your Lily!
