:?: Does anyone have any ideas on how to teach my dog, a 4 yr old miniature pinscher, how to stay out of the garbage?

Keep the garbage away from the dog? Sorry!
Erm, I guess any dog with access to something as great (to a dog!) as a full garbage bin, he's going to take advantage. I say secure your bin better! Where is he getting into it - in the house or outside? I have a baby gate on my kitchen doorway for 2 reasons: 1) to give the cats somewhere to be free of dogs, and 2) to keep the dogs out of the litter trays, the bin, and the cat food 8)

i would also say that all you have to do is block off the garbage so your dog can't get in to

Unfortunately I agree, the best way to keep a dog out of the garbage is to keep the garbage away from the dog. Even if you had a cover on it and it was secure, the dog still could knock it over and get into it anyway. Try putting it in another room, or perhaps in the pantry, or a closet close to the kitchen...or even a small trash can can be stored under the sink, in the cabinet. Good luck!

Under Sink
I think so too. I keep the garbage in a trash can under the sink. Garbage is just too tempting for dogs. The only other thing I could think of would be to get a garbage can with a good lid that the dog can't open.

If keeping the garbage securely away from the dog is not an option, here's one that often works to teach dogs to stay out of places they don't belong.
Get a large, clear carpet protector mat, like you'd place in front of a door to protect it from mud and debris. It has to be one with the little pointy things on the back to hold it in place. Put the mat down with the little pointy things up, instead of down. Put your trash can in the middle of it, and let Mr. Dog experience little pointy things poking his little toes when he tries to get the trash. Don't force him onto the mat. Let him do it to himself. That usually keeps dogs from getting into garbage, especially little dogs.
You can also use this to teach them to stay off furniture, or to stay out of rooms you don't want them going into.

Tried locking my garbage.....
I actually tried locking my garbage can in a cupboard under the sink with a hasp. when that did not work i put a baby gate up... when that did not work i put a shelf in front of the baby gate to the kitchen and kept the lock on AT ALL TIMES.... when that did not work I put the trash can in between the wall and the refrigerater and turned the refrigerater side ways so he couldn't fit.... he moved the refrigerater.... my dogis a 105lb Akita male
after browsing a couple other sites tonight i am going to cover my garbage in hot sauce and set my dog up by leaving the garbage can unlocked.. . i will letyou know how it goes.

Sorry, lol, I had to laugh when I read your latest idea---hot sauce. Hope it works and doesn't burn his mouth too much. You should have a camera on him---might work for tv funny home videos! Yes! Please let us know how it worked!

I taught my dog that the kitchen is off limits. She knows that her paws need to stay on the carpet. It didnt take very long at all for her to learn this and she hasnt gotten into the garbage since.
The easiest way would be to just but the garbage in a place she cant get to. Or get a metal one that has a heavy lid.

This is not that difficult, put the garbage outside.

and puttin the garbage outside where I clean it up after the family of racoons is not that simple. i hate you people whoi think just moving it is the answer. My dog needs to learn how to not get in the garbage rather than me having to adapt to his behaviors. he neeeds to know what is right and what is wrong

You hate us people who offer a simple solution when you failed to include that this was one of the places you had already tried. Who's mistake was that for failing to tell us everything you had done before asking advice.
Why did you not take the time and tell us everything ie: all steps and attempts to avoid this which would have included placing the garbage outside where the dog could not get to it. Are we suppose to read your mind or are we just suppose to know you had tried this previously. I live on a farm, we have coyotes as well as Raccoons and my garbage is in a sealed topped can that has yet to be opened by either. Next time you ask advice, don't be vague with steps you have taken. Offer all that you have done so that we can in turn rule them out.

In the future, something a little less 'heated' for the dog is a bitter apple spray available at most pet stores. This taste is supposedly very disgusting to dogs and will train them not to dig into or chew whatever you spray it on.

I've Bred and raised Akita's all my life! they tend to have gastric issues and hot sauce can cause serious problems!!!..If you don't like members advice instead of being nasty just leave the forum..Nastiness will not be tolerated!!!
