Default strange dog behavior

My neighbors dog has been acting very strange. He has been digging holes to get out of the back yard and has been running off for hours at a time. He usually is put into a cage at night and has been recently going to the bathroom in his cage. A few days ago, we were outside bathing the dogs, and just after he got his bath, he went into the house and deficated on their bed. He is ordinarily a very good dog, what could be going on with him?

It could be a lot of things. 1-He could be ill. Any new, out of the ordinary behaviors should bring up a caution flag in health. Illness should be ruled in or out by a vet. 2-If he's not neutered he could be smelling a bitch in heat. 3-he could be having anxiety and acting out in fear..fireworks this time of year?

Really, it could be anything. You have to rule things out (illness first) and keep monitoring & paying attention too patterns. If he's not neutered that would also be a good step.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
