It could be a lot of things. 1-He could be ill. Any new, out of the ordinary behaviors should bring up a caution flag in health. Illness should be ruled in or out by a vet. 2-If he's not neutered he could be smelling a bitch in heat. 3-he could be having anxiety and acting out in fear..fireworks this time of year?
Really, it could be anything. You have to rule things out (illness first) and keep monitoring & paying attention too patterns. If he's not neutered that would also be a good step.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
