Default My newly adopted dog seems depressed

I just took a shelter dog home today and she won't eat or drink water. I've taken her on 2 short walks and she won't go to the bathroom. I've also let her in the yard for a while and she won't. Her nose is dry so I think she is thirsty but she only sniffs the water. She will put a treat in her mouth but then spit it out. She is just laying on the floor and will roll over to have her belly rubbed but that is the only sign of life. Please help!

We got some food down. Still no water though...

Default Relax

I've fostered nearly 100 dogs. Sometimes they take some time to adjust and get comfortable. Some dogs even take a couple of days before they start eating. As long as she isn't getting dehydrated she'll be ok.

Take her to the vet if she is still acting lethargic and refusing food in a few days. If she doesn't seem to be in pain or running a fever, just give her some time to adjust. She is coming from a highly stressful environment. Changing homes is stressful in itself. Time and patience is likely what she needs.

Relax and enjoy your new addition.
Thanks for rescuing a dog in need!

PS Common possible mistake - Be sure not to stand over her food bowl. It will make her less likely to eat.

Thank you. We are going to get her a crate and see if that helps her feel safe.
