Default My dog rolls in poop!!!!

Hello,

Could someone please help. I have a male schnauzer and terrier mix. When i take him to the park and let him off leash, i'll sometimes catch him rolling in other dogs fecal matter. Why does he do that? More importantly, how can I get him to stop? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is your dog fixed? If not, getting him fixed may help. People making sure to pick up their dog's poop would also help. Carry an air horn an scare the crap out of him the next he does it. I'm not sure if that would help, but it's worked for other people.

Rolling on other dog's poop? Is it just a coincidence or have he done it a lot of times already? Dogs like to roll on the ground and can sometimes roll on a poop.

Sadly when my Obi gets to poop inside his big crate at dawn, I can't pick it up because I'm asleep and there are times where he'd roll up on it.

If you think it is coincidence then you are a very lucky dog owner LOL! It is a very common habit with terriers especially. Some are more prone than others and it is not exclusively a terrier thing - I had a golden retriever bitch that did it. Dog poop was good but fox poop was better!

Along with being vigilant when you walk your dog (I love Luna's idea of an air horn) the best way to clean the coat and neutralise the smell is to rub tomato ketchup into the fur. When you have rubbed the ketchup in really well it needs to be rinsed out as soon as possible or the fur can be stained pink!

Some people find it useful to carry a couple of sachets of ketchup that you get from fast food outlets along with all the other dog walking stuff - poop bags, toys, treats.

Oh, and they do it because they think it smells great!!!! And because it makes them smell more powerful!

Isn't that the truth. Wrigley had a year where he thought it especially smelled great.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I was talking to someone today whose border terrier found a decomposed seagull to roll in yesterday and the car still stinks! I told him about the ketchup and he was shocked - he had bee told that before but thought it was a joke!

Many, many years ago, we had a lab/dobe that found a dead skunk and rolled in it. We buried the skunk and bathed our dog. Then the next day that stupid dog dug it up and rolled in it again. So we buried it with rocks and sticker bush branches. He left it after that.

Hmm... That's a good tip. I'm going to put in a sachet of ketchup at Obi's doggy pack.
