Unhappy My dogs neediness is controlling me

I am sure there must be similar posts somewhere but I cannot find any.

The problem is our 8 month old Weimaraner who we have have a couple of months.

She is really needy! She used to destroy the beds and the kitchen units went we went out. she also used to try chew things when we were in the room, we put this down to puppy behaviour and all this behaviour is getting better.

however when I am in I cannot leave the room without her pinching things and chewing them, this can be soft things pens or glass! She also wants to be sat right next to me on the sofa and will even sit on our other dog to try and be the closest to me or stand on my books or computer and will try over and over again.

Also no one can stand up and walk off without her following after you.
She also wants to be outside alot. unless she is asleep she scratches at the door every 10-15 mins. she does wee alot but can be left up to about 5 hours without any mess.

It seems to be completely controlling my life at home, with everything i do i have to think about Poppy first and it gets me upset everyday

I hope someone can help!!

Thankyou!

Have you tried ignoring her completly? Just allow her to follow you but don't give her any attention, just look beyond her.

My dog follows me everywhere. If I'm not at home he sits in the chair nearest the door so he can be first to see come back but when I am in the house he follows me from room to room and wont even stay on the sofa if I cross the room to close the curtains. I do give him attention - eye contact and the occasional word but nothing more. He only has the attention I give him, he doesn't demand anything more.

the following is not too much of a problem, she doesnt seem to want any actual attention from it, and is quite happy just to see what you are doing. if you go somewhere she cannot see you she often cries, although she does not cry on a night.

She is quite well behaved apart from this apart from being over excited when you come home or when people come to the house and she will not listen to commands when she is jumping around, we always ignore this but if you turn away from her she will just jump and drag her claws down your back, and with her being a big dog you do have to defend yourself if she does jump in your face

I didnt see any where in your post that you have had or done trainning with your new puppy. At 8 weeks you can start working on sit, come, sit, down, and place. Lots of rewards for this good behavor. work at 10 to 15 mins at a time. make it fun for your puppy. I would find a good trainning program to help you with this and then build on this good trainning from there. Other things that could help you would be dont make a anouncement that your leaving the house and your dog home. Leave lights on , tv on. In other words leave your house as if your still there. In secure dogs sense this change, and know your leaving. Only allow them in some areas in the house, they are not free to follow you everywhere. A training exercise for this would be making them sit away from you at distance, for period of time. Once they master that walk around a corner, they cant see you, build on this. Crate trainning is a good too.Always use the crate as positive, safe place to be and rest. Always use Its always good for you dog to have some good trainning, and use it daily, with alot of positive praise. It is worth the money you spend, Have patience, some trainning takes time, I have been working almost 2 years with my min pin with other people petting him, hes very in secure with this. He has come along way with this and has been baby steps, but its all been positive inprovement.

thankyou for your reply.

she is 8 months old although we have and had her a couple of months at most. we have be training her and she can do the usual commands and loose lead walk. we always leave the radio when we o out and they stay in the kitchen too when we are not in. i will make a fuss about half an hour before i leave and then leave them and act normally when i walk out the door. she has got alot better when we are not in. it is mostly the fact that if i go upstairs (where she cannot go) she will then pinch things and chew them.

it probably is just a matter of time and persistence. i should know this as we are currently training our other dog for fear aggression which she has had since we got her. i think it just gets over whelming trying to train and keep an eye on two dogs whilst doing house work and fitting in full time study at home.

i shall try with getting her more comfortable with me leaving the room and see if i can see any improvement :-)

If you can't keep an eye on your dog 100%, then maybe crate training might be your answer. Stick your dog in it's crate before you leave the room. It would save your belongings. We have an aussie mutt, and although it didn't save my couch, the crate has saved quite a bit of my other belongings.

I have friends with weims. They are a very loving breed, so want to be with you as much as possible. She is still a puppy, and as she matures the training you are doing with her will start to pay off. I have found that about 10 - 12 months they start to settle and not be such ratbags

If she is jumping on people when they arrive at the door, not great from a large puppy or dog, put her lead on before you open the door and command her to 'sit'. If you can ask friends to bring a few treats when they come to visit, they can give her a treat when she is sitting calmly. She is an intelligent dog, so it shouldn't take her too long to work out to be 'nice' to visitors.
