Why does My dog lick pee
Hi there,
I did a search but did Not find anything about this, I also was not sure if this is the correct forum, If not feel free to delete and tell me where the correct place for this question.
Everytime I walk my dog He has this NEED to lick the pee of other
dogs that peed ealier.
It is like he is addicted, His lips chatter when I say no and Pull
him away and He tries so Hard to get back to the spot to eat it more. I have to pull him away or he will sit there forever licking and eating it.
I have tried to train him not too, because As he licks and eats
the pee he is also eating grass, dirt, ect. And I believe it is upsetting his stomach.
I feed him Nutro Natural Dental Diet, which my vet said is fine
and has the nutrients he needs. He also Always has fresh water.
He is not fixed yet (is going next week) If that means Anything
Thanks

This is typical behaviour of entire male dogs. The urine of other dogs contains all the information about them. It should stop when/if you get him castrated.

my guys were neutered years ago & still do it. its a "guy" thing!
I am a little concerned about your choice of food tho. please understand that vets get no classes in nutrition in school & what they sell they get big kick backs on.
here are the ingredients in your brand
Lamb Meal, Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Egg Product, Potassium Chloride, Dried Kelp, Clove Bud Oil, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Cranberry Powder, Biotin, Niacin, Garlic Flavor, Manganous Oxide, Chondroitin Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Parsley Oil, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid.
you see the amount of rice? that's all filler & when weighed together I guarantee you weighs much more than the lamb meal. soy is a known allergen to dogs. I see almost no omega fatty acids which are needed to prevent dry skin & fur.

Dogs who lick pee
My dog does this too. I was interested in it as well. After a lot of research, I've found a theory that I think may explain this behavior.
When dogs are puppies and are confined to a small area with their biological mother, the mother often consumes the puppies' waste in order to keep the area clean at all times. Also, when you are training your puppy, you generally will immediately clean up any accidents the dog has. The theory states that by licking pee or eating feces, a dog is simply mimmicking your and his mother's behaviors. He may not lick up very much of the pee, but by licking it in front of you, he shows that he has made an effort to keep the house clean.
The shame-faced look my dog gives me when he licks pee make me think that this is why he does it. To show me that he is trying and is remorseful for his mistake.

It's a natural dog behavior. Intact males do it because the pee of other dogs contains a lot of information. Especially if the other dog happens to be female. They chatter because it's exciting and exhilarating.
Rather than punish and yell, try distracting your dog. I don't allow my boys to sniff, much less lick pee-mails. It's all a matter of training. Use yummy treats, and when they start sniffing, say "No sniff" and distract with a treat. It doesn't take all that long for them to get the message.

It's entirely natural behaviour, my dog does it too. I like how you described it, the chattering

Interesting theory. Would they still do that for pee that wasn't their own?

I don't understand why you are trying to interfere in a completely natural behaviour that hurts noone. I believe an animal is to be respected for what he is. He is not meant, nor should be expected, to comply to your aesthetic standards, he isn't a "little human". As long as his behaviour is natural and not endangering anyone or anything then punishing him for doing what comes naturally to him I feel is unjust.

I also think it's a natural dog behavior and they probably think that it tastes good.

It is a natural behavior specially for puppies. They are in stage of curiosity. Other reason for this is that they might lack the essential nutrients that they cannot get from food your are giving them and they are trying to remedy it. Try giving him a food every time he tries to lick his pee.

Thargoid, Quite simply, I do not allow my dogs to sniff and lick other dog's urine because it can transmit diseases like leptospirosis and brucellosis. And to be perfectly honest, I don't want them to have urine breath. I also don't punish them for it, I have trained them not to do this by distraction and rewarding with treats.
There are lots of other "natural behaviors" I do not allow them to do; chasing cats, eating feces, drinking from mud puddles and humping each other, for example. Just because a behavior is "natural" doesn't mean it's safe, or desirable. Some behaviors that may be natural in dog society are down right rude in human society.

There isn't much information that I can find on dogs that will urinate and then lick or drink the urine. The
only references I can find to this suggest that it is a learned behavior in some dogs that are constantly penned when young (usually pet store dogs) and that it occurs in other situations in which excessive boredom is likely. Some people have associated this behavior with hormonal changes in unspayed female dogs but I don't know if there is really any data to support that
association.
The only treatment options that I have seen for this is to use amitriptyline (Elavil Rx) or clomipramine (Clomicalm Rx). I am not sure what the rational is behind using these medications, though.

They say most dogs do this because they have a urinary infection. And so the dog is so dehydrated it will even drink urine. Is that true?

Natural? It's a completely nasty and disgusting behavior.
Unjust? I think not. How would you like it if your dog licked his pee, and then licked you or one of your kids in the face?...

It IS a completely natural behavior. You might find it nasty and disgusting, but then again, you are not a dog.
It's also natural behavior for dogs to eat feces; their own, other dog's, rabbit poo, cow poo, and especially horse poo. Again, it's something you might find nasty, but it's natural for the dog.
Bitches stimulate their puppies to urinate and defecate by licking them. If they don't, the puppies don't eliminate. It's nature's way of keeping the nesting area clean. No one, not even a dog, wants their babies to lay in urine and feces soiled bedding.
Dogs also clean their privates and anal areas by licking them. They clean their feet by licking them, and lord only knows what they walked through before they do it.
If all of that bothers you, teach your dog not to lick your face.

Yep. And if you stop and think about all the places your dog has sat his naked butt on, you'd have to move to a new house!
