Default Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.

Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend

In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:

• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him

• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

• How to relate to your dog on a canine level

• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners

• Why every dog needs a job

• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family

• The difference between discipline and punishment

• And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Customer Review: Excellent, but shouldn't be the only reference for a dog owner
My husband and I are big fans of Cesar's show The Dog Whisperer and are amazed at Cesar's natural ability to communicate with all kinds of dogs. Someone else mentioned that the book does not provide any information that you can't get from watching the show. That is true, but it does provide you with a single reference point that you can return to when necessary for several behavior problems that cannot be addressed in a single show. Not only that, but it also provides a little background about Cesar and how he developed his understanding of dog behavior and dog "rehabilitation" techniques. However, if you are truly interested in dog behavior and want to be an educated dog owner, you should supplement your learning by reading other books on dog behavior. Even Cesar refers to other experts in the field and other books he recommends. Cesar's ideas are not new, and Cesar's way is not the only way.
Customer Review: SIMPLY THE BEST!
He starts out telling a bit of himself, his upbringing and WHY and HOW he knows so much about how dogs think and what they need becomes apparent...dont be put off by that part, its necessary and puts a faith in him and his knowledge of dogs of all kinds in all conditions, If you're new to his methods. Then he goes about explaining each aspect of what he has learned and why its necessary if you want your dog to be happy as the dog he is, not just to be happy yourself with a cute or smart or beautiful dog..that can do tricks etc. This Training is for YOU the owner, then you will make for a good pack leader and happy dog, by following his method, it takes practice, daily commitment, not some easy thing just by reading a book or watching his shows alone, he says it...It takes a daily commitment! But what a reward! in the end. HE IS THE BEST-HE KNOWS DOGS!!!! better than anyone I've ever seen or heard of. I'd say buy this book and the DVD as a set to watch and enhance what you learn in book. BTW I do have 2 dogs (Sheltie and a Lab) , so I know it works.

Cesar Millan is just a smart corrective trainer with an excellent sense of timing and intensity. I enjoy watching him on TV, but it's not like he's cornered a market that nobody else has. He just isn't afraid to tell people that their dogs' behavior is their fault, not the dog's fault, and that if they change THEIR behavior the dog will get better, and that's his genius.

He emphasizes exercise, and doesn't let people make excuses for not exercising their dogs (great), and stops people from encouraging bad behavior by rewarding bad dogs (petting tense dogs, etc.). Also great. He's a one-trick pony in terms of advanced training--I don't think he could teach a great finish or succeed in French Ring or anything--but he is very, very good at teaching people to deal with their household dogs in a healthy way.

Another money-making plot by the TV companies. I can't stand his methods, the only thing I can say is that he is trying to make a difference- not in a style I agree with, but he tries.
Just how a dog is supposed to overcome a fear by being dragged into the scary situation, I don't know. Infact I don't think he knows but eh. Each to their own.

I rescued 2 fearful shepherds. And with Cesars methods these 2 have come a long way. I do walk them before we go to the Vet's, friends homes, dog parks so they will be less anxious. I also tell people no talk, no touch and no eye contact. And it really calmes them then they feel better about approching people.
I hear many people talk about "flooding" but if you really watch and listen to him you would agree. In order to fix you have to face it.

I also used 2 trainer in my area ,they really did not agree with Cesars ways but they think whatever I am doing, is working. Remember Cesar is dog rehabilitater, and people trainer.

I am a huge fan! I don't think he claims to be a dog trainer instead he rehabilitates dogs and trains people. Years ago I made my living as a horse trainer and although horses aren't dogs, his methods/message ring true.

I saw the episode where he "dragged" the dane onto the shiny floor. Then he waited while the dog sorted himself out. There was a lot more to what he did for that dog than merely dragging it into a scary situation. His energy/belief that the dog would be fine has a huge impact on how the dog starts to re-experience the shiny floor.

Animals pick up very subtle cues from us about how they should react.

Thumbs up Cesar's Way Book - results followup!

Hi Pawsies, I have had a chance to study Cesar Millan up close (no, not one of his staff, just run an email list devoted to helping people who use his solutions because of my own sucesses in rehabbing problem dogs who were about to be euthanized or their problems)!

The astonishing thing is how committed Cesar's team AND the production company who does both his TV shows and the educational materials he now has out to help these dogs who otherwise would be destroyed or abandoned. Te easiest way is to go to the bookstore to look at His new Dog Whisperer Season 1-3 episode guide to look at all the successful followup stories just that Cesar has done from that show alone (over 315 episodes).

Cesar's Way is so great (especially using the index in the back of the book!) because it is like learning how to drive a car - how to handle dogs.

His next book "Be the Pack Leader" is like learning what makes the car run - one learns the mechanics of WHY Cesar's Pack Leader way works so it becomes easier to apply these solutions not only in the dog/human relationship, but the human/human relationship!

Remember that Cesar only deals with the worst of the worst - when people cannot get any more help locally other then - put the dog down! I know that I have rehabbed and helped to rehome about 26 dogs which you can see many of them on my you tube site:URL="http://www.youtube.com/cjanderson"]http://www.youtube.com/cjanderson[/url]

In my email list there have been over 14,500 members who have come in and worked with their dogs and moved on because my list is so high volume (many times around 100-150 posts a day which is why people can search the archives rom theoutside without joining or more help!

JenL Your understanding is accurate - he goes out of his way to explain that he is NOT a trainer (nor am I - Im just a dog owner) but works with using dog psychology. You know the saddest thing that gets ignored by the nay-sayers, is that Cesar also constantly says to use th LEAST amount of energy to help the dog. So if people will have the time and patience to develop enough skill to work with that dog using the clicker method, for instance, then Cesar would be the first one to give a standing ovation.

Unfortunately, when these worst case dogs come to Cesar, it generally is a case of fix the dog or kill the dog and so he needs to use methods designed to have the dog "get it" faster - WITHOUT harming the dog! This is where is martial arts training has made such a difference because he NEVER gets angry or frustrated!

I always challenge the anti-Cesarians to produce hard eveidence from any vet, animal hospital/emergency room showing that ANY dog that Cesar has directly worked with has been harmed. They cant - because there is none.

Further, the one COURT case that the nay-sayers love to refer to? They get that wrong too! A trainer friend of Cesar's had asked to use the tools at his facilities while Cesar was out of town, and the Trainer was the one that injured that dog using Cesar's treadmill. Not Cesar's staff, or even Cesar who was not even in town! Most of the time people only watch a few minutes or get news from a place that got their news from another place that had news and in typical post office form, the information becomes completely skewed or inaccurate!

Any way, 100% of dogs who are brought to shelters to be abandoned there (besides the humans who lost their homes and cant care for the dogs any more) are brought because they are thought of as problem dogs. I am working with many people to help these owners learn how to fix the problems (that many times they are creating) so these dogs dont get abandoned to be someone elses problem or destroyed, AND to rehab these dogs at the shelters, so they do NOT have to be destroyed.

Love this book. I've bought this a month ago and I really like how it helps me solve some of my dog's problematic behaviour. He obeys me now even more.

Of course they are committed...when you're a pop icon like Cesar the quickest way to make a buck is to stay committed until your 15 minutes have ended. When people start to realize how Cesar justifies his methods is a pack of lies, that wave will end. Hopefully sooner than later. Though that may be a challenge since the vast majority of dog trainers are ignorant to proven methods of dog training.

There is no one way to train a dog, so to suggest there is manual to do this is silly. I think what owners should ask themselves, why choose to start with a method that could stress or hurt the dog without trying less aversive methods first. Only until Cesar started to receive criticism did he attempt to show alternate methods on his show. He should be commended for this. The majority of his cases, however, he doesn't even consider how stressed the dog is.

This is hardly true. A dog obsessed with chasing a skate board is not the worst of the worst. A dog who hasn't learned how to walk on lead is not the worst of the worst. Perhaps these dogs are owned by ignorant owners, but Cesar does not "only" deal with the worst cases. He also deals with common dog issues that can be trained without using physical punishments like he does.

Not a trainer? It is hard to imagine how one can rehabilitate a dog without a basic knowledge of how dogs learn or why they would want to skip this important step that encourages cooperation and puts the owner in a "leadership" position. The least amount of energy? But at what cost? For higher ratings perhaps?

He does get frustrated, I've seen confusion on his face...he's human just like you and I. He may do a better job at hiding his frustration on TV, and he may have experience rehearsing calm behavior for the camera, but this does not mean he's less human or does not express these emotions. He would do better to explain calm behavior as a necessary antecedent to control the dog's behavior. To have the dog "get it faster" however, is a lousy excuse to justify the punishments that follow.

Well this is pretty silly argument too. The majority of Cesar's critics aren't referring to physical abuse, although some of his methods could be classified as abuse. I can recall an episode where Cesar lifted a dog a few feet off the ground and swung him by the scruff of his neck. Most dog owners, if this happened to them at the dog park, would start a fight over this. But since this is a TV show it falls under the guise of "rehabilitation". Silly!

What the critics are primarily concerned with is the psychological stress that the dogs are placed under during the show. I can recall one episode with a Jindo that was forced to submit, and although the dog 'appeared' to be relaxed for the camera, I saw a dog who quickly learned helplessness. All hail Cesar! Great job at traumatizing a dog!
