Every year, millions of dogs are abandoned—at animal shelters, racetracks, or on the side of the road. Many of these animals end their days without ever knowing a caring human hand, but some are fortunate enough to be found and given a second chance. And these dogs, often rescued from death’s door, seem to have even more than the usual canine capacity for love and loyalty.
Found Dogs is full of wonderful photos and words by people who have adopted dogs in myriad ways. Celebrities from Peter Mayle, Jamie Lee Curtis, Al Gore, and Bobby Short to everyday heroes who have found dogs--from purebreds to scruffy mix-breeds--that have become service dogs, protectors, and friends, offering solace, aid, companionship, and inspiration.
Found Dogs is a moving tribute to the power of love between people and dogs--how that love has transformed dogs who were lost, and the people who were lucky enough to find them.
Customer Review: Slow, blissful tears....
I was afraid to order this book at first because I am such a huge animal lover and get very distressed when I hear stories about animals who have been abused or abandoned. I literally get nightmares when I read about animals who are suffering and I wasn't sure if this book would be more upsetting then pleasurable since I knew many of the dogs would have tragic tales before adoption. My experience with this book: got it today, sat down on the sofa with it and simply could not put it down. I read every story and even though many of them were tragic they really didn't dwell on the horrific past in a way that made me uncomfortable. I did cry but they were slow, blissful tears that often melted into the edges of an unforseen smile. These stories are some of the most uplifting, gorgeous stories I have ever read and the photos that accompany them are beautiful, often spontaneous portraits of owners embracing their saved animals. In every furry face you can see the joy and the gratitude and the extinguished pain. They are saved and they are home and it burns your eyes and warms your heart and leaves you shivering in goose pimples. I am SO glad I decided to order this book! It's a must have for anyone who loves dogs.
Customer Review: Page turner- impossible to put down!
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (6/06) Millions of dogs are euthanized every year because animal shelters are unable to find homes for them. Countless others wander the streets, homeless and starving, living on what they can scrounge from our garbage. However, this is not the fate of all these poor, miserable dogs. This book tells the story of approximately fifty dogs who managed to escape. The individual stories vary, but each one has the same theme...someone cared enough to make room in their life for one of God's wounded creatures. Award winning photographer Diana Walker has outdone herself with these beautiful pictures showing the bond between dogs and owners. Each picture is accompanied by a short story from the owner about how they happened to adopt their particular dog. The common thread in each story is not that the dog was so beautiful or outstanding in some way, but that each person felt, deep in their heart, that this was the dog for them. It didn't matter how the dog looked, how dirty or sick it was. There was that certain something, impossible to put into words, which drew them to that dog. This is a book that I found nearly impossible to put down until I had read every page. I've spent my entire adult life taking in strays and misfits and I found myself nodding in agreement with so many of the stories. You don't want to miss this.
