Default How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days or Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers

One of the funniest and most astutely observed works on the sexes since James Thurber, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers (over 207,000 copies in print) turns the often-expressed axiom "Men are dogs" into a howling little handbook on men for contemporary women. Doggie Dos and Don'ts: "Gentle strokes and playful petting techniques are positive motivational techniques for rewarding good behavior." And Flight and Chase Behavior: "If your dog is running away from you, the worst thing to do is chase after him . . . remain calm, act like you're having loads of fun without him, and soon he'll be trotting eagerly back." Doggie Dogmas: "Dogs like to eat out of your plate." "It's pointless to compete for the attention of a dog caught up in a ball game." And a quick primer on personality and temperament, from The Sporting Dog (requires daily exercise, gets bored easily, needs lots of attention) to The Hound (instinctually driven to chase and catch nearly anything that moves). With its tongue-in-cheek humor and illustrations that evoke an old Esquire magazine, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less assures that control will be yours forever, as behavioral problems vanish within twenty-one days. It's guaranteed.
Customer Review: Quite offensive and lacking real substance. Avoid it.
I was about to write exactly what a previous reviewer wrote before me, so I'll quote: "Can you imagine the feedback if this book were titled "How to Make Your WOMAN Behave...Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers"? Especially if it included the same illustrations of demeaning poses, but replaced by females." Of course, we would never hear the end of it. Feminists would use this to show how men are chauvinist pigs who think of women as bitches. They'd decry the degrading tone of the book, the degrading pictures, the social implications, bla bla bla. But it's perfectly ok to publish such a book about men. This book does little to help men or women understand each other or to advance anything in the discourse around these topics. If you're a woman, it certainly will NOT help your love life. Shall I remind you that the author of "The Rules" book, is now divorced? I am willing to bet that Salmansohn is single as well, and is not truly happy in her relationships. If you'd follow the advice in this book, you will soon find yourself in a catch-22, or a lose/lose situation. If the guy has any self-respect, he will not fall for the suggestions she offers in the book, so you'll lose him. If he does, YOU will lose interest in him. Will you ever respect a guy that you trained like a dog? Think about it. Either way, you'll lose, and you'll end up miserable. This is not a wholesome book. It's a book that will make you lonely and bitter, or just plain cynical. It will not make you happy. In her blog (search Google), the author claims she's "spiritual". If this is her kind of spirituality, I shudder to think what is her "materialism". The author wrote another book, titled "Even God is Single: (So Stop Giving Me a Hard Time)". I have not read it, but, check the back cover (on Amazon): "Tired of hearing the same old question: Why aren't you married? Never let anyone dare question your single status again. Inside this therapeutic little book, you'll find 26 good, snappy single-girl comebacks to fling at anyone who makes you feel like you're half of a person just because you're no half of a couple." Do you see how the two are connected? She gives you advice on how to train your man as a dog, and when, as a result, you end up single and miserable, she publishes yet another book, just for you (since you need it), with 26 comebacks as to why it is so great for you to be single. Do you realize how nutty this is? Again, if this is spirituality.. yuch.. Dumb, dumb, dumb all the way around. If you want to read an EXCELLENT book written by an animal trainer who gained a great many insights into human psychology from training dolphins, read Karen Pryor's wonderful book, "Don't Shoot the Dog". What a phenomenal book! It will help you deal with your male and female spouses, kids, bosses and those around you, in an effective and wholesome way, so you ALL end up better off. Win/win, not lose/lose. Get rid of garbage like Salmansohn's book. Read the real stuff, and your relationships will be better and both you and your partner will be happier. Depicting men as dogs, along with submissive images and cutesy phrases like "you'll get him to fetch your newspaper every morning", are just dumb and do a disservice both to men and women. Bottom line: don't buy this book. Instead, read something wholesome, intelligent, with good insights, something that will teach you valuable information that can actually make your life better. Avoid this kind of garbage, even if it's written with part of the tongue in cheek.
Customer Review: cracked me up - and I am a guy!
Sex in The city humor -- but oddly kinda true. I always kid with girlfriend that guys are dogs -- including me -- so she showed me this book! I definitely got a big laugh from it. Some of it is true about both men and women. The author discusses flight and chase behavior -- when your dog is runing away you dont chase after him because that only makes him run away faster. You just act like youre having fun without him -- and the dog just wants to be where the fun is - so he will return. Good counsel for both sexes.
